The 9730 takes HP 938 cartridges, in four separate part numbers: black for about 1,250 pages, cyan, magenta and yellow for about 800 pages each. One point changes everything on this machine: those yields are measured on A4 pages, and the 9730 prints up to A3.

An A3 page is exactly twice the area of an A4 one. At equal ink coverage it therefore uses twice as much. If you mostly print in A3, halve the stated yields: the 1,250 pages of the black become around 625.
This is not a criticism of the machine — it is the rule for every consumable, since the ISO standard is measured on A4. But on an A3 printer the gap between the figure on the box and reality is twofold, and it is better known before building a budget.
The 9730 is an A3 production multifunction: 34 pages per minute, automatic duplex, automatic document feeder. Duplex doubles the number of printed sides per sheet, the feeder makes copy runs painless — two functions that speed up ink consumption far more than print speed itself.
The four cartridges are independent, unlike on entry-level DeskJet models where the three colours share a single body. You replace only the colour that has run out: on a machine that prints a lot, the saving is real.
Black, yes, if the machine serves a department or a workshop: it runs out first and its absence stops everything. For the colours, wait for the first replacement to see which one goes fastest in your case — it depends entirely on what you print.
