The documentation is explicit: the 71B50x0 cover the CS and CX 317, 417 and 517, while the 71B5Hx0 are listed only for the 417 and 517. In other words, moving from a CX317 to this CX417 unlocks not one cartridge but four — the black doubles, each colour gains more than 50%.
It is an argument that shows neither on the speed nor on the price of the machine, and yet it weighs on three years of operation: four replacements avoided each time the full set comes round.
At the ceiling of the range Lexmark recommends, a standard 3,000-page black is replaced twice a month and its high-capacity version once. At the 800-page floor, the standard lasts close to four months and the question does not arise. The tipping point therefore sits around two to three thousand pages a month — beyond that, the large format is no longer a comfort option.
Printing, copying, scanning and faxing, with built-in duplex and a 10.9 cm touchscreen. The machine also has a manual single-sheet feed: that is the way envelopes, labels and heavy media go through, without having to empty the 250-sheet tray. A trivial action, but done badly it produces jams that then get blamed on the cartridge.
