Frequently asked questions about this product
How many pages does the toner supplied with the MS431dn last, and can you do better afterwards?
The supplied starter cartridge lasts about 3,000 pages. For replacements, three yields are available: 3,000, 15,000 and 20,000 pages with the Unison extra-high-yield toner, values declared in accordance with the ISO/IEC 19752 standard. Choosing the largest size significantly reduces the number of replacements and the downtime.
What does “return programme cartridge” mean?
These cartridges are sold at a lower price than standard cartridges, in exchange for a commitment: you use them once, then return them to Lexmark for remanufacturing or recycling. Standard cartridges, on the other hand, are sold at the normal price and can still be recycled free of charge through the collection programme.
Will a cartridge bought abroad work in this printer?
Be careful: the MS431dn only works with cartridges designed for its geographical region. A reference intended for another region will not be accepted. So check the region before buying, including for the high yields of 15,000 and 20,000 pages.
Is the toner the only consumable to plan for?
No. An imaging unit also needs replacing, with an estimated yield of 40,000 pages (based on 3 A4 pages per job and approximately 5% coverage). One is supplied in the box: it is an expense to plan for, but it comes well after the toner.
Which cables are supplied in the box?
Only the power cord: USB and Ethernet cables are not included, so order them at the same time. The box also contains the starter cartridge, the imaging unit, the software and documentation CD, the network or local setup sheet, and the warranty and safety documents.
Without Wi-Fi, can you print from an iPhone or an Android smartphone?
Yes, through the network: the MS431dn connects via Gigabit Ethernet, and mobile printing relies on AirPrint for Apple and Mopria Print Service for Android, the printer being Mopria-certified. There is, however, no wireless connection: the printer must be connected to the wired network.
Can you increase the paper capacity if 350 sheets is not enough?
Yes. As standard, 350 sheets: a 250-sheet built-in tray plus a 100-sheet multipurpose feeder. An optional 550-sheet tray, also available in a lockable version, brings the total to 900 sheets and takes the printer from 2 to 3 paper inputs. Output capacity, however, remains 150 sheets whatever the configuration.
Can the printer's memory be expanded later?
No: 256 MB as standard and 256 MB maximum, and there is no internal hard drive. Large jobs therefore rely on the 1 GHz dual-core processor, which delivers the first page in under 5.9 seconds and handles complex documents in PCL 6 or PostScript 3.
Does the printer keep up its 40 pages per minute in duplex?
No. Single-sided, it reaches 40 pages/min in A4; in automatic duplex, the rate drops to 18 sides per minute. Duplex is built in as standard, so there is nothing to add and nothing to turn over by hand, but take this gap into account when planning large duplex print runs.
Can it print envelopes, labels or heavy paper?
Yes: envelopes (DL, C5, B5, No. 9, No. 10, 7 3/4), paper labels, cardstock and sizes from A6 to Legal, Folio or Oficio. For paper weight, allow 60 to 120 g/m² from the standard tray and up to 217 g/m² through the multipurpose tray, the 100-sheet multipurpose feeder: that is the one to use for heavy media.
Can you print right up to the edge of the sheet?
No: a non-printable margin of 5 mm remains at the top, bottom and both sides. For a document designed edge to edge — business card, flyer, coloured page background — plan a layout that allows for this area rather than cropping afterwards.
Is it noisy, and how much power does it really use in the office?
It prints at 53 dB (50 dB in duplex) and drops back to 14 dB in standby, so it is very quiet when idle in a shared office. On energy: 4.9 W ready to print, 0.9 W in sleep mode, 0.1 W in hibernate mode, for a typical consumption of 0.47 kWh per week; the 570 W peak corresponds to printing itself.
Does it work with a Mac or with Linux workstations?
Yes. For Apple, support comes through AirPrint and AirScan. For Linux: Ubuntu 16.04 and 18.04 LTS, Debian 8.11 and 9.4 to 9.6, Red Hat Enterprise Linux 6.10, 7.5 and 7.6, Fedora 27 to 29, SUSE Linux Enterprise 12 and 15. For Microsoft, drivers cover Windows 7 to Windows 10.
How can you stop a confidential document being left lying on the output tray?
PIN-protected confidential printing is provided as standard: the job is held and only released once the code is entered on the printer. On the network side, it supports 802.1x authentication, SNMPv3, HTTPS (SSL/TLS) and IPsec over both IPv4 and IPv6, enough to integrate it into a managed fleet.
Is the MS431dn built to last, and what warranty does it come with?
Its chassis is made of steel and its fuser unit is rated for an unlimited lifespan; the maximum duty cycle reaches 80,000 pages/month for a recommended volume of 800 to 8,000. It is new, with a 1-year return-to-base warranty covered by its invoice: see the datasheet (PDF).
