Does the Kingston KC600 encrypt data by itself?
Yes. 256-bit AES encryption is performed by the drive's controller, without putting any load on the processor. It complies with the TCG Opal and Microsoft eDrive standards, the latter being what allows BitLocker to hand encryption over to the drive rather than the system. A stolen drive remains unreadable without its password.
Is this SSD suitable for expanding a PlayStation 5's storage?
No. The KC600 is a 2.5-inch drive with a SATA interface, not NVMe: it is not compatible with the PS5's expansion bay, which requires an M.2 module. It is, however, built to replace the system drive of a desktop PC or a laptop with a 2.5-inch drive bay, where it delivers 550 MB/s read.
Do you need a heatsink or cooling for this drive?
No. The KC600 is specified without a heatsink and without any cooling device: it screws straight into its bay, with no metal cover or thermal paste. That is one of the conveniences of the 2.5-inch format in a machine whose interior is already cluttered.
Why does a SATA SSD like the KC600 top out at 550 MB/s?
Because that is the practical limit of the SATA 6 Gb/s bus it connects to. The KC600 makes full use of it, with 550 MB/s read and 520 MB/s write. To go beyond this ceiling, you need to move to an M.2 NVMe module, provided the machine has a slot of that type.
How much data can be written to this 512 GB drive before it wears out?
300 TB, or nearly six hundred complete fills of the drive. The memory is TLC, driven by a Silicon Motion SM2259 controller. As the TRIM command is supported, the drive reclaims erased space and keeps its write speed as it fills up.
What are the advertised 90,000 read IOPS for?
They are the small random accesses handled every second, the ones that create the responsiveness you feel: system start-up, opening applications, browsing a large folder. The KC600 handles 90,000 read and 80,000 write — a figure that matters more day to day than the 550 MB/s sequential.
Does this drive fit in a laptop's 2.5-inch drive bay?
Yes. It measures 100.1 by 69.85 mm, is 7 mm thick and weighs 40 g: that is the slim 2.5-inch form factor laptops expect. In a tower, it occupies a 2.5-inch mounting position and connects to a SATA port on the motherboard, with no special power or cooling requirements.
Is the drive new and under warranty?
It is new, and your invoice serves as the warranty document. The security suite — 256-bit AES, TCG Opal and Microsoft eDrive — is built into the drive itself: it is available from installation, whatever machine you fit it in, and with no third-party software to buy.
