Frequently asked questions about this product
Does the 512 GB model really reach 7,000 MB/s write?
No. On the 512 GB version, sequential speeds are 7,000 MB/s read but 3,900 MB/s write. The 7,000 MB/s in both directions applies only to the 2,048 and 4,096 GB capacities, with the 1,024 GB version at 7,000/6,000 MB/s. If sustained writing is what matters to you, go for a higher capacity.
Do you need a PCIe 4.0 motherboard to get these speeds?
Yes: the announced figures are measured on a PCIe 4.0 motherboard, as the SSD uses a PCIe 4.0 x4 NVMe interface. The speed actually achieved then varies with the hardware and software configuration of the host PC and with the usage: check this on your motherboard's specifications before buying.
Does this SSD fit in a thin laptop?
Yes: M.2 2280 form factor, 80 × 22 × 2.21 mm and 7 g in this capacity, low-profile graphene aluminium heat spreader included. This slimness lets it fit where a thick heatsink would not: the 2 and 4 TB versions, on the other hand, go up to 3.5 mm thick.
Can this SSD be installed in a server?
No. It is designed for use with desktop or laptop computers, not in server environments. It is, however, at home in a demanding machine — 3D rendering, 4K and higher content creation, with reduced loading times — and its compact M.2 form factor also fits small form factor systems.
Will I really have 512 GB of free space after installation?
A little less, and that is normal: part of the advertised capacity is reserved for formatting and other internal functions, on this SSD as on any flash memory. The space actually available for your data is therefore lower than the 512 GB printed on the box: allow some headroom if you install a system and large software on it.
How much data can be written before the SSD wears out?
The 512 GB version is rated for 400 TB written in total (TBW rating measured according to the JEDEC JESD219A Client Workload); the 1 TB version goes up to 800 TB. Wear can be tracked precisely with the Kingston SSD Manager application, which displays a percentage used starting from zero on a new drive.
Does it run hot or use a lot of power in a laptop?
Its power consumption remains modest: 0.34 W on average, with peaks of 2.7 W when reading and 4.1 W when writing in this capacity — the 4 TB version, by contrast, climbs to 10.2 W when writing. The built-in graphene aluminium heat spreader dissipates heat to maintain performance over time.
What controller and memory does the Kingston KC3000 use?
A Phison E18 controller, 3D TLC NAND and a dedicated DRAM cache. In the 512 GB capacity, it is rated at 450,000 IOPS 4K random read and 900,000 IOPS write.
Under what temperature and vibration conditions can it operate?
From 0 to 70 °C in operation, with storage possible from -40 to 85 °C. It also withstands vibrations of 2.17 G in operation and 20 G when not operating: enough to cover use in a laptop carried around every day.
Is the SSD new and under warranty?
Yes, the SSD is new and sealed, supplied with its invoice, which serves as the warranty document for 1 year. You can check the drive's wear at any time with the Kingston SSD Manager application, which displays its percentage used. The full specifications are given in the Kingston datasheet (PDF).
