Frequently asked questions about this product
Does the NV3 1 TB write as fast as the higher capacities?
No. For reading, they are all at 6,000 MB/s; for writing, the 1 TB is rated at 4,000 MB/s, whereas the 2 and 4 TB reach 5,000 MB/s. The 6,000/5,000 MB/s highlighted for the series therefore apply to the large capacities, not to this one.
Is cloning software supplied with this SSD?
Yes, the NV3 comes with Acronis cloning software. It copies the contents of the old drive — operating system, software and data — to the new module, so you do not have to reinstall everything after the replacement.
Is this SSD suitable for a server?
No. Kingston states that the NV3 is designed for desktop PCs and laptops, not for server environments. For a tower, a laptop or an ultra-compact PC, on the other hand, that is exactly what it is aimed at.
How thick is the module, and does it fit in a thin laptop?
2.3 mm and 7 g, at 22 by 80 mm. It is one of the flattest profiles in the M.2 2280 form factor, intended for thin laptops and ultra-compact PCs where space under the cover is tight. The weight is the same across all capacities in the series.
What is the difference between the 2280 and 2230 versions of the NV3?
The length. This part number is the 2280, i.e. 22 by 80 mm, the one used in motherboards and laptops. The shorter 2230 — 22 by 30 mm — is aimed at handheld gaming consoles and has separate part numbers. Check with the device's manufacturer before installing an SSD.
How many terabytes written can the NV3 1 TB handle?
320 TB, or 320 complete fills of the drive. The scale for the series is published: 160 TB on the 500 GB, 640 TB on the 2 TB and 1,280 TB on the 4 TB. This endurance can be tracked as a percentage used in the Kingston SSD Manager application.
Does this SSD run hot in a compact machine?
It is positioned as high-speed, low-power storage: Kingston highlights its energy efficiency and low heat output, presented as a way to optimise system performance. Its operating range is 0 to 70 °C.
Why doesn't the advertised 1 TB show up in full in the system?
Because part of the nominal capacity is reserved for formatting and for the flash memory's internal functions: the space actually available is therefore lower than the figure shown on the box. This is true of any flash storage device, whatever the manufacturer.
Is the drive new and under warranty?
It is new, and your invoice serves as the warranty document, with free technical support from the manufacturer. The mean time between failures is rated at 2,000,000 hours. The full datasheet covers both form factors and all capacities.
Built for animation and video editing, it reaches 6,000 MB/s read and 4,000 MB/s write. Host memory buffer and SLC cache, 320 TB written of endurance and PlayStation 5 compatibility as expanded storage.
7,200 MB/s read and 4,400 MB/s write in a 6 g module just 2.45 mm thick. 500 TB written endurance, no moving parts and proven resistance to shock and vibration.
Built for heavy use with 1000 TB written of endurance and a mean time between failures of 1500000 hours. A 6 g module, 2.45 mm thick, with no moving parts, resistant to shocks and vibration.
The finned aluminium heatsink lowers the temperature by 40% and holds the speed over time: 7,400 MB/s read, 6,000 MB/s write. It also fits inside a PS5.
Built for 3D rendering and 4K editing: 7,000 MB/s read, 3,900 MB/s write, Phison E18 controller and DRAM cache. The low-profile aluminium-graphene heatsink prevents throughput dropping under sustained load.
Short enough to fit an ultra-thin laptop or a handheld games console, and it weighs only 2.6 g. 5,000 MB/s read, 3,000 MB/s write, low power draw and 160 TB written of endurance.
Simple upgrade for a laptop or a tower: 5,000 MB/s read and 3,000 MB/s write, host memory buffer and SLC cache. 160 TB written of endurance and PlayStation 5 compatibility.
Around six times the speed of a SATA model: 3,300 MB/s claimed in read, for instant start-ups and application launches. 240 TB written endurance and a design with no moving parts, resistant to shocks.
Stated endurance of 300 TB written, enough to take years of office work and photography. Speeds of 500 MB/s read and 450 MB/s write, with no noise or vibration, in a tower or in a laptop.
