Is the finned heatsink already fitted to the module?
No, you install it yourself, and one precaution is essential: first remove the M.2 heatsink built into your motherboard. Trying to stack the two can damage the drive. ADATA provides an installation video online for anyone who has never done it.
How tall is the module once the heatsink is fitted?
10.65 mm, measuring 80.6 by 23.2 mm and weighing 36.6 g — versus 80 by 22 by 3.3 mm and 7.3 g without the heatsink. That is a considerable difference: measure the clearance above the M.2 slot before ordering, or you may not be able to close the machine.
What speeds does the 1 TB version of the LEGEND 960 MAX advertise?
7,400 MB/s read and 6,000 MB/s write. The 6,800 MB/s write figure you may see associated with this model applies to the 2 TB and 4 TB capacities: on the 1 TB, sequential write tops out at 6,000 MB/s. Read speed, on the other hand, is the same across the whole range.
What speed does this SSD reach once installed in a PS5?
6,400 MB/s sequential read, measured with the console running, and this value applies to all capacities in the range. Sony points out that a drive exceeding its official standard does not necessarily deliver, in every game, the performance of the console's built-in SSD.
Does this SSD have its own cache memory?
Yes, it has a dedicated DRAM cache, backed by an SLC cache. This sets it apart from modules that borrow part of the PC's RAM: the mapping table stays on the drive, which helps it keep pace in multitasking and during large transfers.
Can this drive encrypt the data it stores?
Yes, it supports 256-bit AES hardware encryption. LDPC error correction also ensures the accuracy of the data transmitted. The controller that runs it all is an SMI SM2264, paired with 3D NAND memory.

780 TB, or 780 complete fills of the drive. The figure rises to 1,560 TB on the 2 TB and 3,120 TB on the 4 TB: the 3,120 TB figure sometimes associated with this model belongs to the largest capacity, not this one. Mean time between failures is 2,000,000 hours.

730,000 read and 610,000 write for the 1 TB version. These small accesses are what make multitasking smooth: compiling, multi-track editing, a virtual machine in the background. The 750,000 and 630,000 sometimes quoted apply to the 2 TB capacity.
Does it work on a motherboard that only supports PCIe 3.0?
Yes, it is backward compatible with PCIe 3.0: speeds then drop to 3,400 MB/s read and 3,000 MB/s write, as the bus becomes the limiting factor. A PCIe 4.0 motherboard is required to get the advertised 7,400 and 6,000 MB/s.
