What slot does my computer need to take this SSD?

An M.2 connector wired for PCIe, and an operating system that supports NVMe. That is the point to check before ordering: some M.2 slots are wired for SATA only and will not recognise this module. The form factor is the standard 2280, 22 mm by 80 mm.

What does NVMe offer compared with the older AHCI protocol?

NVMe 1.3 requires better metrics than AHCI, inherited from spinning hard drives: scalable bandwidth, higher IOPS and lower latency. That is what allows the P34A60's four PCIe Gen3 lanes to reach 2,200 MB/s read and 1,600 MB/s write.

How does an SSD without a cache chip sustain these speeds?

Thanks to its HMB architecture: the host driver reserves a portion of the PC's RAM for the drive's exclusive use, where it keeps its mapping table. An SLC cache is added on top for write bursts. That is what allows such a slim form factor without sacrificing efficiency.

How does this drive protect data integrity?

Through three combined mechanisms: LDPC error correction, end-to-end protection that checks the data retrieved is indeed the data written, and a built-in RAID engine that provides a level of fault tolerance within the drive itself.

How thick is this module, and does it fit in a laptop?

3.5 mm and 8 g, at 22 by 80 mm. The compact form factor allows installation in laptops, small form factor PCs and some ultrabooks. Still check the clearance under the cover, as this thickness is greater than that of the flattest modules.

Is this SSD reliable for a machine used every day?

The stated mean time between failures is 2,000,000 hours and it withstands shocks of 1,500 G over 0.5 ms, with no moving parts at all. Its operating range is 0 to 70 °C. It is a drive positioned as affordable, but with the data protection of a higher-end model.

How do you monitor the drive's health once it is installed?

With SP Toolbox, Silicon Power's free utility. It gives the self-monitoring report, the space used, the drive temperature and the total bytes written since it was first put into service, and lets you run performance tests as well as a full diagnostic.
