Does this drive protect data in the event of a power cut?
It provides end-to-end data protection, which checks data integrity all along the path to the memory. Power loss protection, on the other hand, is specific to the SNV3500 series, in the M.2 22110 form factor: on a NAS without backup power, that is a point to weigh up.
Are the advertised 3,000 MB/s peak figures or sustained speeds?
Sustained speeds. The 3,000 MB/s read and 750 MB/s write are measured in full sustained mode, under the JESD219A enterprise workload defined by JEDEC — not over a burst lasting a few seconds. That is what sets a cache drive apart from a consumer model.
How many terabytes can be written to this 400 GB SSD?
491 TB, also measured under the JESD219A enterprise workload. This figure counts twice here: the warranty covers the drive until the end of its period or until its endurance is used up, whichever comes first. On a heavily used cache, it is the endurance that runs out first.
How much power does it draw in an enclosure that runs around the clock?
3.5 W in active read, 3.3 W in active write and 1.6 W at idle. On a NAS that is always on, it is this last figure that weighs most on the annual electricity bill, since most hours are spent waiting for requests rather than processing them.
How do you monitor the drive's wear once it is installed in the NAS?
Directly from DSM. Synology drives report a health status that takes into account the workload actually handled over time, trigger notifications before the threshold is reached, and update in one click when new firmware is released.
How good are its random IOPS for a NAS cache?
225,000 random read IOPS and 45,000 write, on 4 KB blocks at high queue depth. These small accesses are what the cache absorbs in place of the hard drives: that is where perceived responsiveness is decided on very busy shares.
In what temperature conditions can this SSD operate?
From 0 to 70 °C in operation, and from -40 to 85 °C when powered off. Every drive in the series goes through stress tests covering intensive I/O, power cycling and temperature before being validated for Synology systems.
