Frequently asked questions about this product

How does the 2230 form factor differ from the usual 2280?

In length: 22 by 30 mm instead of 22 by 80 mm. It is the short form factor, intended for ultra-thin laptops, ultra-compact PCs and compatible handheld gaming consoles, whose M.2 slot is too short to take a standard module.

Can it be installed in a handheld gaming console?

It is listed for compatible handheld gaming consoles, where the upgrade brings a faster gaming experience. Kingston does, however, recommend checking with your device's manufacturer before installing an SSD: not all consoles allow the drive to be replaced.

How much does this short module weigh?

2.6 g for the 500 GB version, at 22 by 30 mm and 2.3 mm thick. That is a third of the weight of the same capacity in the 2280 form factor: on a pocket-sized device, these grams and millimetres are precisely what decides whether the job can be done.

What speeds does the NV3 2230 claim in this capacity?

5,000 MB/s read and 3,000 MB/s write over the PCIe 4.0 x4 interface. These are the figures for the 500 GB capacity; the 1 TB and 2 TB versions in the same short form factor go higher. So the 2230 form factor does not hold back performance compared with the 2280.

How much data can be written before the drive wears out?

160 TB on this 500 GB capacity, or more than three hundred complete fills. The mean time between failures is rated at 2,000,000 hours. The wear counter can be read as a percentage used in the Kingston SSD Manager application.

Is this SSD suitable for a server?

No. Kingston states that the NV3 is designed for desktop PCs and laptops, not for server environments. It is meant for upgrading a personal computer or a portable device, not for continuous operation in a storage array.

Is it easy on the battery life of a battery-powered device?

That is a deliberate focus: Kingston presents the NV3 as a high-speed, low-power storage solution, energy-efficient and generating little heat. On a pocket-sized device with limited ventilation, these two points matter as much as raw throughput.

Is the drive new and under warranty?

It is new, and your invoice serves as the warranty document, with free technical support from the manufacturer. It carries the part number SNV3SM3/500G — different from that of the 2280 form factor — and that is the one to quote if you return it.
