Can it be installed in an older PC with SATA 2 ports?
Yes. The interface is SATA Rev 3.0 at 6 Gb/s, backward compatible with SATA Rev 2.0 at 3 Gb/s. On an older machine, the drive works without any particular intervention, at a transfer rate capped by the port rather than by the SSD. The gain in responsiveness remains very clear compared with a hard disk drive.
Is this A400 suitable for a server?
No. Kingston explicitly intends it for desktop and laptop computers, and advises against using it in server environments. For a workstation, a desktop tower or a laptop, on the other hand, that is exactly its target, and it directly replaces the system drive.
How much power does it consume, and does that affect a laptop's battery life?
Very little: 0.279 W on average and 0.195 W at idle, with peaks of 0.642 W when reading and 1.535 W when writing. Compared with a hard disk drive and its motor, the difference shows directly in battery life, and the drive runs cooler under the keyboard — two more reasons to install it in a laptop.
Why does not all of the advertised 480 GB show up in Windows?
Because part of the nominal capacity is reserved for formatting and the drive's internal functions: the space actually available for your files is therefore lower than the figure printed on the box. This is the case for all flash storage devices, whatever the brand.
Is the 480 GB faster than the 240 GB in the same series?
For writing, yes: 450 MB/s versus 350 MB/s for the 240 GB. For reading, both are rated at 500 MB/s. The 480 GB also doubles the write endurance, 160 TB versus 80 TB. So the difference shows when copying and installing, not when reading files already in place.
How much data can be written to it in total?
160 TB on the 480 GB version, or more than three hundred complete fills of the drive. The full scale for the series is published: 80 TB on the 240 GB and 300 TB on the 960 GB. This endurance can be monitored in the Kingston SSD Manager utility, as a percentage used.
Can this drive handle being carried around every day?
Yes. With no moving parts, it tolerates 2.17 G of vibration in operation, from 7 to 800 Hz, and 20 G when not operating, from 10 to 2,000 Hz. It operates from 0 to 70 °C, stays silent and runs cooler than a hard disk drive: a good candidate for a laptop or a mobile machine.
Does it fit in the 2.5-inch bay of a thin laptop?
Yes. It measures 100.0 by 69.9 mm, 7 mm thick, and weighs 41 g: precisely the size intended for thin laptops with limited space, as well as for the 2.5-inch bays of a tower. No heatsink or cover is needed, as a SATA SSD does not require cooling.
Is the drive new and under warranty?
