How many writes can this SSD handle before it wears out?
It is rated for 170 TB of cumulative writes (TBW) on the 512 GB version, with an MTBF of 1,500,000 hours. That represents more than 90 GB written every day for five years before reaching the stated limit: for office work or a family computer, the margin is very wide.
Why will my system show less than 512 GB after installation?
Because capacity is counted as 1 GB = 1,000,000,000 bytes and advertised unformatted: once the drive is formatted, the space actually available is lower than the figure in the name. It also varies with the environment and the formatting chosen.
Is the advertised 530 MB/s the maximum achievable?
Yes, on a SATA III 6 Gb/s interface: the 512 GB version is rated at 530 MB/s read and 450 MB/s write sequential. These values apply to sequential transfers of large files.
Will the SSD stay as fast after months of use?
The TRIM command is supported: the operating system itself frees erased blocks, which preserves write performance over time. The drive is recognised plug-and-play on Windows, macOS and Linux. It is all based on 3D NAND memory driven by a dedicated HIKSEMI controller.
Will multitasking be smoother, or only start-up?
Both. What matters day to day is 4K random access: the 512 GB is rated at 63,000 IOPS read and 69,000 IOPS write. It is this value, more than sequential speeds, that affects system start-up and opening several applications at once.
Does this SSD fit in the drive bay of a thin laptop?
Yes: 2.5-inch form factor, 7 mm thick, with a maximum weight of 34.4 g. It fits equally well in a laptop or a desktop PC, on a SATA III port. Installation is plug-and-play: the drive is recognised as soon as it is connected.
Can it be installed in a PlayStation 4?
Yes: the Wave(S) series is stated as suitable for desktop computers, laptops and the PS4. The drive is a 2.5-inch SATA III form factor and works plug-and-play, with no driver to install. It delivers 530 MB/s read and 450 MB/s write on the 512 GB version.
How much power does it draw on a laptop battery?
1.9 W maximum for the 512 GB version, versus 1.3 to 1.4 W on the 120 to 256 GB capacities in the series. The drive has no mechanical parts: no motor or platters, everything goes through an electronic controller chip.
Does it withstand shocks and drops in a bag?
Its design is stated as shock-resistant and drop-resistant, since no mechanical parts are involved: data is handled by an electronic chip. The series is also tested to the standard for video surveillance servers, a continuous-operation use.
Can it cope with the heat of a poorly ventilated room?
Its operating range is 0 to 70 °C, and powered-off storage -40 to 85 °C. Operating temperature is reported by the drive's S.M.A.R.T. data, which can be viewed from any monitoring utility. An office or a hot room therefore stays very far from the upper limit.
Is the SSD new and under warranty?
