Does the 240 GB write as fast as the 480 GB in the same series?
No. For reading, both are rated at 500 MB/s; for writing, the 240 GB tops out at 350 MB/s versus 450 MB/s for the 480 GB. Its write endurance is also half as high, 80 TB versus 160. So the difference shows when copying files and installing software.
Can it be installed in a machine with SATA 2 ports?
Yes. The interface is SATA Rev 3.0 at 6 Gb/s, backward compatible with SATA Rev 2.0 at 3 Gb/s. On an older machine, the drive is recognised without any intervention; it is then the port that limits the transfer rate, not the SSD. The gain over a hard disk drive remains very noticeable.
Is 240 GB enough for a system drive?
It is the entry-level capacity in the series, intended to replace the drive of an office desktop or a laptop and hold the system along with everyday software. Kingston also offers 480 GB and 960 GB versions if you plan to store your documents, photos and videos on it.
Is this drive suitable for a server or a NAS?
No. Kingston intends the A400 for desktop and laptop computers, and explicitly advises against using it in server environments. For an office tower, a workstation or a laptop, on the other hand, that is exactly its target.
How much power does it draw from a laptop battery?
0.279 W on average and 0.195 W at idle, with peaks of 0.642 W when reading and 1.535 W when writing. These figures, and the absence of a motor to spin, explain why a laptop gains battery life and runs cooler after switching to an SSD.
Why is not all of the advertised 240 GB available?
Because part of the nominal capacity is reserved for formatting and the drive's internal functions. The usable space is therefore lower than the figure printed on the box, on this drive as on any flash memory, whatever the brand.
Can it withstand the jolts of a computer being carried around?
Yes. With no moving parts, it tolerates 2.17 G of vibration in operation, from 7 to 800 Hz, and 20 G when not operating, from 10 to 2,000 Hz. It is also quieter and cooler than a hard disk drive, making it well suited to laptops and mobile machines.
Does it fit in a laptop's 2.5-inch bay?
Yes. It measures 100.0 by 69.9 mm, 7 mm thick, and weighs 41 g: that is the size intended for thin laptops where space is tight, and it occupies a standard 2.5-inch bay in a tower.
Is the drive new and under warranty?
It is new, and your invoice serves as the warranty document, with free technical support from the manufacturer. The full datasheet gives the transfer rates, power consumption and write endurance for each capacity.
