Do you need a power outlet nearby to install this kit?
It runs on its built-in 10,000 mAh lithium-ion battery, recharged by the supplied Tapo A201 solar panel (5.2 V, 2.5 W). The included USB-C cable is used for top-up charging, so you can install the camera far from any wall outlet.
How long does the battery last if there is no sun for several days?
Up to 120 days on a full charge, according to Tapo laboratory tests based on 300 seconds of daily use. Conversely, a single hour of direct sunlight under standard conditions recharges the camera for a full day of use.
What is the difference between the camera's two lenses?
The wide-angle lens is fixed (165.1° field of view, manually adjustable over 240° horizontally at installation) and keeps the whole scene in view. The telephoto lens, on the other hand, is motorised: with 334° pan and 90° tilt, it zooms digitally up to 10.8x and automatically tracks the subjects detected by the first lens.
Can the kit monitor two different areas at the same time?
Yes: the fixed wide-angle lens covers one area while the pan/tilt telephoto lens monitors another, with synchronised smart tracking that automatically locks the telephoto lens onto any movement spotted by the first lens.
Does the 10.8x digital zoom still give a usable image?
Even before zooming, the telephoto lens captures 4.9 times more detail than the wide-angle lens on the same scene, according to TP-Link internal tests. The digital zoom of up to 10.8x therefore remains sharper than a zoom applied to the wide-angle lens alone, with quality beyond that then depending on the lighting, as with any digital zoom.
Does the camera really recognise what is moving, or does it trigger on any movement?
It uses AI to distinguish people, pets and vehicles, with no subscription needed for this alert sorting. However, the detection thumbnail attached to the notification requires a Tapo Care subscription; without it, the alert remains basic.
Does this camera need a subscription to work day to day?
The essentials work without a subscription: AI detection by type, alerts and local recording on a microSD card (up to 512 GB, not included). The Tapo Care subscription remains optional, reserved for cloud storage and detection thumbnails in notifications.
Do you need a recorder or a network cable for this kit?
No. There is no Ethernet port: the camera connects only over dual-band Wi-Fi (2.4 GHz and 5 GHz) via the Tapo app, and records locally to a microSD card inserted in the camera, with no separate NVR box.
Can the camera withstand rain and the intense heat of the Moroccan summer?
Yes, it is IP65 certified against dust and water jets, and operates from -20°C to 45°C. Only battery charging is limited to a narrower range, from 0°C to 45°C.
Can you see in colour at night, or only in black and white?
Both modes are offered, selectable in the app: colour night vision thanks to the 6 built-in white-light spotlights, or a classic infrared mode (850 nm, range up to 10 m) that is more discreet and more energy-efficient for the battery.
Does the kit include everything needed for wall mounting?
The box contains the camera, the Tapo A201 solar panel with its bracket, a base cover, a USB cable and its extension, and a cable tie. The wall, ceiling or pole mounting fixings are, however, not included and must be obtained separately.
Can the camera also deter an intruder, not just film?
Yes: beyond recording, it triggers a 91.5 dB siren at 10 cm, six white-light spotlights and two alarm lights, in addition to AI detection notifications.
Is this kit new, and with what warranty?
Yes, it is a new product, sold with its purchase invoice, which serves as the warranty document. The commercial warranty is 1 year from purchase.
