How do you choose the connectivity on this Aruba 5406R zl2 chassis?
Slot by slot: the 6 slots are supplied empty and each one takes the module suited to your needs — Gigabit, 10GbE, 40GbE or PoE+. You only equip the ports you need, and add the others later.
How many ports can be fitted across the 6 slots?
A maximum of 144 auto-sensing 10/100/1000 ports, or 144 SFP ports, or 48 SFP+ ports, or 48 HPE Smart Rate multi-gigabit ports, or 12 40GbE ports — or any combination of these options.
Can a module be added or replaced without taking the network down?
Yes. Modules are hot-swappable, including between modules of different types, without interrupting traffic; so are the power supplies, once an optional redundant power supply is installed. Interface modules and power supplies are zl accessories common to the whole range, which simplifies spare-parts stock.
Do you need to buy licences to enable OSPF, BGP or IPv6?
No. The Layer 2 and Layer 3 feature set — OSPF, BGP IPv4, IPv6, Dynamic Segmentation, QoS and policy-based routing — is included with no software licence to purchase. So are the programmable interfaces: REST API and OpenFlow 1.0 and 1.3, to automate operations, monitoring and troubleshooting.
Do all the advertised features work with any module?
No, and this is the point to check before ordering: VSF stacking, Fast Software Upgrade, VxLAN and voice IP SLA require v3 modules; policy-based routing, MAC-based VLANs and L3 mesh need v2 at minimum.
How much PoE+ power does this switch deliver per port?
Up to 30 W per port in IEEE 802.3at (PoE+), enough to power Wi-Fi access points, IP cameras and phones; 802.3af devices and pre-standard PoE equipment are also supported. PoE depends on the modules installed. When it detects an Aruba access point, the switch auto-configures the port's VLAN, CoS, PoE power and PoE priority.
What happens if the management module fails?
Traffic keeps flowing: with redundant management, the interface and fabric modules keep switching during the failover to the standby module, and OSPFv2/v3 and VRRP keep routing. VRRP also lets two routers back each other up, over IPv4 as well as IPv6.
Can you manage the switch if the network is down?
Yes, through out-of-band management: a dedicated RJ-45 Ethernet port, or an RS-232C or micro-USB serial console. In day-to-day operation, management goes through the CLI, the web interface, SNMP, the REST API, AirWave or Aruba Central, with RADIUS, TACACS+ and SSHv2 authentication and an activity log.
How much space and weight should you allow for in the rack?
Allow 4U of height: 450.9 × 444.5 × 175.3 mm for 11.11 kg. It is the compact 6-slot chassis of the 5400R series, designed for rack mounting with redundant power and cooling.
Can you update the software without risking losing everything?
Yes. The switch keeps two independent system images in flash memory, primary and secondary: you update one while the other remains available as a fallback. Several configuration files also fit in the 16 MB of onboard flash.
Can two chassis be linked so that you manage only one?
Yes, with VSF stacking: two switches form a single resilient virtual switch, with standard LACP aggregation to the servers, which reduces the need for STP, ECMP and VRRP — provided v3 modules are used. Updates are then carried out member by member, cutting downtime to a few seconds.
How many VLANs and devices can this switch handle?
It supports 4,094 simultaneous VLANs in 802.1Q and a table of 64,000 MAC addresses. Jumbo frames are supported at Gigabit and 10 Gigabit, useful for remote backups, and segmentation can be refined with protocol-based VLANs (802.1v), Q-in-Q (802.1ad) and private VLANs.
Is the switch new, and what warranty applies?
It is new, in its original packaging, supplied with its invoice, which serves as the warranty document for 1 year. The full feature list is in the manufacturer's datasheet (PDF).
