The 178nw takes four HP 117A toner cartridges, one per colour, plus a 120A imaging drum sold separately. Expect 1,000 pages for black and 700 pages per colour. Those yields are deliberately short: it is the trade-off of a compact colour laser, and it is worth knowing before you order.

The 178nw is the 3-in-1 of the range: it prints, copies and scans, but it does not fax and has no document feeder — you copy sheet by sheet, on the glass. That constraint has a direct effect on consumables: it discourages long copy runs, and the black toner lasts longer here than on the 179fnw, its twin fitted with a feeder.
Its speed tells the same story: 18 pages per minute in black, 4 in colour. A colour page takes four times longer than a text page, which naturally discourages colour output — and makes the cyan, magenta and yellow toners last well beyond what their 700 pages suggest.
A colour page draws on all three colour toners, each rated for 700 pages. An honest calculation therefore adds up the three part numbers; it does not look at the price of a single one. On a machine in this class, colour stays several times dearer than black: leave the driver in black and white by default, and keep colour for what justifies it.
Nothing on the consumables side: the 179fnw takes exactly the same part numbers, and so do the 150a and 150nw. The difference is in the machine — the 179fnw adds fax and an automatic document feeder.
