Four toners that run out almost together

On an office colour laser, the black always goes first: it serves alone for all the text, and its yield far exceeds that of the colours. So it is ordered separately, several times over for a single set of colours.

Here the gap narrows to 1,000 pages, and it stays in the same proportion on the high-capacity versions. If the machine genuinely prints in colour, all four cartridges reach the end of their life within a tight interval. The consequence is direct: on this machine it is simpler to think in full sets than toner by toner. A set of four 212A covers roughly the same period, and you avoid three separate orders a fortnight apart.

A recommended volume that goes up to 10,000 pages

HP quotes 2,000 to 10,000 pages a month for a maximum cycle of 80,000. At the top of that range, a set of 212A does not even cover the month: that is the threshold at which you stop ordering singly and start holding stock.

At the bottom of the range, the same set lasts more than a quarter. It is the printer's real volume, and not its speed of 38 pages per minute, that decides the resupply pace.

The toners supplied with the machine are not full 212A

The M555dn comes out of its box with four toners pre-installed, but their yields differ: 5,500 pages in black — a complete 212A — and only 3,500 composite pages in colour. So the original colours will run out before the black, the reverse of what happens afterwards with replacement 212A.

The box also contains the toner collection unit. It is a part separate from the cartridges, which gathers the powder not laid on the paper; it is replaced far more rarely, and the machine gives notice when it approaches saturation.
