HP quotes this 3103fdn for small teams, up to seven users. That is unusual: specification sheets almost always speak in pages per month. The unit is more telling, though, and it converts easily.
An ordinary office workstation prints between one and two hundred pages a month. Seven people is therefore in the order of 700 to 1,400 pages a month — which falls exactly within the range HP recommends elsewhere, 350 to 2,500. At that pace, a 145A lasts from six weeks to two and a half months, a 145X from three to five months.
Count the people who actually print on the machine, multiply by a hundred and fifty pages, divide the yield by the result. Above five active users, the 145X saves a replacement every six weeks; below three, the 145A is ample and tying money up early is not justified.
Printing, copying and receiving a fax lay down toner; scanning does not. On a machine shared by a team, copies made at the feeder and incoming faxes appear in no computer tracking. Reading the machine's counter a month apart remains the only way to know the real volume — and therefore the right cartridge format.
