The 151X costs more to buy and clearly less per page. The rule of thumb is simple: if you change toner more than once a year, the high-yield version already pays for itself, and it saves you two interventions out of three. Below that, the 151A does the job and ties up less money.
Nothing forces you to stick to one: both part numbers go into the same machine and there is nothing to stop you alternating. An office that prints in bursts — a lot at month end, little the rest of the time — is better off keeping a 151X, precisely because running out of toner always happens on the day you need to print.
The 4003dn is a fast single-function printer: 40 pages per minute, automatic duplex, Gigabit Ethernet, no scanner and no Wi-Fi. It is a production machine, sitting on a network and shared — and automatic duplex doubles the number of printed sides per sheet, and therefore toner consumption for the same amount of paper.
It has no separate drum to reorder: the toner carries everything. One part fewer to watch, and a clearer maintenance budget.
