3,050 pages "at 5% coverage"

Toner yield is measured to the ISO/IEC 19752 standard, on a test page where ink covers about 5% of the surface. In concrete terms that is a letter: a few paragraphs of text, plenty of white. It is an honest basis for comparing brands — it is not a forecast for your office.

Your real pages often cover a good deal more:

a table with grey shading or a coloured background can double the coverage;
a letterhead with a logo repeated on every page adds a few points;
a photocopy reproduces the background of the original, including the grey of yellowed paper.

At 10% coverage, a 151A does not do 3,050 pages but around half that. It is not a faulty toner: it is the same toner on a different page.

How to know where you really stand

The machine keeps count. The supplies usage report, printable from the touchscreen, gives the number of pages actually produced by the cartridge fitted. Compared with the stated yield, it gives you your average coverage — and therefore, once and for all, your real cost per page.
