This machine is not shared: what it prints, one person has sent. Individual use rarely runs beyond three to five hundred pages a month — so more than two years for a 10,000-page 59X, and a good six months for a 59A.
The question that then arises is no longer cost per page but keeping. The good news: toner powder does not dry out and does not expire the way an inkjet's ink does. A cartridge that stays two years in a machine, or sealed in its packaging, will print as well at the end as at the start. The large format therefore has no drawback here beyond tying up money earlier.
3,000 pages against 10,000: the gap is unusually wide for a single family. It runs across the whole set of siblings — M404, M406, M428 — and it explains why the 59X is nearly always the better choice as soon as the machine goes beyond a few hundred pages a month.
No networking, so no printing from a phone and no shared queue. No automatic duplex either: sheets are turned over by hand. That changes nothing about the toner — the number of pages printed stays the same — but doubles paper consumption for anyone who does not take the trouble.
