It is counter-intuitive, and yet it is the rule on this machine: tray 1 takes 60 to 200 gsm, while tray 2, the larger one, tops out at 120 gsm. Heavy paper therefore goes through the secondary tray, never through the main cassette.
Ignoring that limit is the most frequent cause of a fault wrongly blamed on the cartridge: toner coming away, uneven solid areas, repeated jams. The fuser has no time to bond the powder on media too heavy for the path it was fed through — the cartridge has nothing to do with it.
This variant prints both sides with no intervention. The saving is real but it applies to paper, halved, never to toner: the number of pages printed does not change, so neither does the powder laid down. A 59A will hold the same number of pages, duplex or not.
At the floor of the range HP recommends, a 59A covers four months and a 59X more than a year. At the ceiling, three weeks and two and a half months respectively. That is the only calculation that separates the two formats — both cartridges share the same slot, and the machine recognises on its own which is fitted.
