It is one of the rare families where the ratio between standard and high capacity comes out round, which makes the trade-off simple: at double the price the cost per page is identical; below that, the 87X is cheaper.

That is this machine's distinctive feature, and it appears in no advertisement: all three trays take 60 to 220 gsm. On most office lasers, only the secondary tray goes beyond 160 gsm — the main cassettes top out around 120. Which is to say covers get printed sheet by sheet.
Here, a 550-sheet cassette can stay loaded with heavy paper. For a practice producing bound reports or files with card covers, that detail is what decides, far more than the quoted 43 pages per minute.
HP recommends a volume of 1,500 to 6,000 pages a month on this machine. At the ceiling, an 87A lasts six weeks and an 87X three months; at the floor, six months and a year respectively. So the 87X is not justified by volume — either lasts — but by the number of times somebody has to attend to the machine.
The 87A and 87X also serve the LaserJet Enterprise M506 and the M527 multifunction models. An M501dn standing beside those models therefore shares its stock with them, which is rare between a Pro range and an Enterprise range: the two families usually have separate consumables, as the LaserJet Enterprise M406dn shows with its quite different part number.
