Why all four empty together

The stated yield — 1,800 pages per colour — is measured on a page that uses only that colour, at 5% coverage. A real document looks nothing like that.

On a colour laser, most shades are composed: a green mixes cyan and yellow, an orange magenta and yellow, a grey may draw on all three. So a single presentation page with a chart and a coloured band draws on several cartridges at once — and often on the black too, for the text.

That is what explains the frequent surprise: three cartridges reaching the end of their life within days of each other. It is not a fault, it is normal behaviour. The practical consequence is simple: on a colour machine, keep a set in reserve, not an isolated cartridge.

The black partly escapes the rule

The black has 2,000 pages against the colours' 1,800, but above all it works alone on every ordinary document — letters, quotations, delivery notes. On an office machine where colour stays in the minority, it is replaced two to three times more often than each of the other three.

HP recommends a volume of 750 to 4,000 pages a month for this machine. At the ceiling, the black lasts a little over two weeks.

What the 4303fdn adds

It scans both sides of a document in a single pass of the feeder, faxes, copies and prints at 35 pages per minute, with a 4.3-inch touchscreen and 300 sheets of input. It connects over Gigabit Ethernet or USB — with no Wi-Fi, unlike the 4303dw, which takes exactly the same toners.

Scanning uses nothing. Copying uses as much as printing, and a duplex feeder this fast makes copy runs so easy that they soon become the leading source of spending.
