Does the Samsung Smart Monitor M5 work without a computer?
Yes: it runs the Tizen system and its apps, such as Netflix, YouTube or HBO, accessible directly with the remote control supplied and the built-in speakers. Wi-Fi 5 and Bluetooth 4.2 are also built in, with no extra box needed.
Can you work on the M5 without connecting a PC?
Yes, in two ways: the Microsoft Office 365 suite for viewing and editing documents saved in the cloud, and remote access to a desktop computer. The latter requires Windows 10 Pro or macOS 10.5 and later, and Office 365 requires its own licence.
Can my Galaxy phone act as a computer on this monitor?
That is the wireless DeX feature: the phone displays a desktop interface on the monitor, with productivity apps, video conferencing and the browser. It is supported on certain Galaxy, Note and Tab devices only: check that your model appears on Samsung's list.
Does the M5 work with an iPhone or a MacBook?
Yes, AirPlay 2 is built in: a MacBook can use it as a wireless second screen, and an iPhone or iPad can send videos, music and photos to it. The Tap View feature, for its part, displays a phone's content with a simple tap on the monitor.
What video inputs does the Samsung M5 offer?
Two HDMI 2.0 ports, plus two USB ports. There is neither DisplayPort nor USB-C: a computer therefore connects over HDMI, or uses wireless casting. An HDMI cable is supplied with the monitor.
Does the Smart Monitor M5 have a headphone jack?
No: neither a headphone jack nor an audio input. Sound comes out through the built-in speakers, and the monitor's Bluetooth 4.2 lets you pair wireless headphones or a wireless speaker with it.
How good is the Samsung M5's panel for office use?
It is a 27-inch Full HD VA panel, with a 3000:1 contrast ratio, 250 cd/m² typical brightness — 200 minimum —, 178° viewing angles and HDR10 compatibility. The refresh rate is 60 Hz and the response time 8 ms grey-to-grey: an office and multimedia profile, not a fast gaming monitor.
Does the monitor adjust its brightness on its own?
Yes, the Adaptive Picture feature relies on an ambient light sensor to adjust brightness automatically according to the time of day and the lighting in the room. It is complemented by Eye Saver mode, which reduces blue light, and flicker reduction.
Do you have to switch source manually when you plug in a device?
No: the Auto Source Switch+ feature detects the device that has just been plugged in and switches to the right input by itself. HDMI-CEC compatibility also lets you control certain devices connected over HDMI from the monitor's remote.
Is the Samsung M5 stand height-adjustable?
No: only the tilt can be adjusted, from -2° to +22°, with no height adjustment or rotation to portrait mode. A VESA 100 x 100 mm wall mount is provided for, with the monitor weighing 5 kg with its stand and 3.6 kg without.
How much power does the Samsung Smart Monitor M5 use?
26 W in typical use, 50 W at most and 0.5 W in standby, or 38 kWh per year, for an energy efficiency class of A — the best in this whole category. Its power supply is internal, with no external brick to find room for under the desk.
Can this monitor be controlled by voice?
Yes: the Bixby voice assistant is built in, in French among other languages, and lets you switch between apps or control playback. The SmartThings app offers the same control from a phone.
Is the Samsung M5 monitor new and under warranty?
Yes: new, in its original packaging, with a one-year warranty; your invoice serves as the warranty document. The box contains the remote control, an HDMI cable and the 1.5 m power cable.
