Frequently asked questions about this product
Does the Synology HAT5300 Enterprise 12 TB drive support non-stop operation?
Yes, it is designed for 24 hours a day, 7 days a week service, with a stated workload of 550 TB per year. That is the fundamental difference from a desktop drive, which is sized for a few hours of daily activity.
What transfer rates can you expect from the Synology HAT5300 Enterprise 12 TB?
Up to 254 MB/s sustained transfer rate, with a rotational speed of 7,200 rpm and 256 MB of cache. The sustained rate describes what the drive maintains over time, not a peak measured over a few seconds.
What interface does the Synology HAT5300 Enterprise 12 TB connect to?
6 Gb/s SATA, in 3.5-inch form factor — the standard connection for NAS and server bays. Its capacity is 12 TB.
What does the stated MTBF for this drive mean?
The mean time between failures — here 2.5 million hours. It is not the lifespan of an individual drive, but a statistical probability established across a population: this is how an operator sizes their stock of spares.
What happens in the event of a power cut?
The drive has a persistent write cache: data waiting to be written does not disappear when power is lost. This is what limits data corruption during a sudden power cut, even before a UPS steps in.
Is this drive faster in a Synology NAS?
Sequential reads are stated to be up to 23% faster in a Synology NAS. The gain comes from the joint optimisation of the drive firmware and the DSM system — it does not carry over to another brand's storage enclosure.
How do you update this drive's firmware?
From DSM, in one click, without removing the drive from the bay. It is a real operational gain: with a third-party drive, a firmware update often means removing it and connecting it to a dedicated computer.
Is the Synology HAT5300 Enterprise 12 TB drive new and under warranty?
New, part number HAT5300-12T, in 3.5-inch form factor, in original Synology packaging. The invoice serves as the warranty document for 1 year. Keep it: it is the document that will be requested in the event of a claim.
