Is the HAT5310-16T compatible with my Synology NAS?

Synology designs it for its own NAS and IP SAN arrays, and lists the HAT5300 series among the compatible drives for its recent RackStation models, including the RS1226+, RS1626xs+, RS3626xs, RS4826xs+, RS6426xs+ and RS2423RP+II. Check your model's compatibility list on synology.com before ordering: some NAS only accept the drives it lists.

Does the HAT5310-16T use CMR or SMR technology?

CMR, conventional magnetic recording. Unlike SMR, it does not need to rewrite neighbouring tracks on every write: performance stays consistent during RAID rebuilds and long writes, which makes it the right choice for a NAS running continuously with several users.

What workload can the HAT5310-16T handle?

Up to 550 TB of data transferred per year, whether read, written or verified, with an MTBF of 2.5 million hours. It is built for 24/7 environments: enterprise file servers, large-scale video surveillance or media post-production. MTBF is a statistical value, not a product lifespan.

Why is the HAT5310-16T helium-sealed?

Helium, lighter than air, creates less drag on platters spinning at 7,200 rpm: the drive runs cooler and draws less power, 8.35 W in operation and 4.16 W idle, while holding more platters, hence 16 TB in a standard 3.5-inch form factor. The sealed enclosure also protects the mechanics from dust.

What capacity will the system show for this 16 TB drive?

Less than 16 TB: the manufacturer counts 1 TB as 1,000 billion bytes, while operating systems calculate in powers of 2. The system therefore shows about 14.5 TB, and usable capacity then depends on formatting and the RAID configuration chosen: in RAID 1, two 16 TB drives only offer the capacity of one.

How do I update the HAT5310-16T firmware?

In one click from DiskStation Manager, on a Synology NAS: no Linux command line. Synology measures an update time cut from more than 50 minutes to a few minutes per system fitted with 24 drives. Its persistent write cache also reduces the risk of data corruption during a power outage.
