Cordless IP Phones: DECT and Wi-Fi

A cordless IP phone frees users from their desk while keeping their SIP line: the handset rings and makes calls wherever there is coverage. Two technologies coexist, and they are not chosen in the same way.

DECT relies on a base station connected to the network, paired with handsets — up to 10 depending on the model — and, in large buildings, repeaters. It is the system of choice for warehouses, workshops and retail floors: range reaches 400 metres outdoors and battery life runs to tens of hours.

Wi-Fi handsets, on the other hand, need no base: the handset joins the existing wireless network. There is no infrastructure hardware to install, and rugged models certified IP65 or IP67 are available for demanding environments.

Handset, Base Station or Repeater?

A DECT handset on its own only works when paired with a compatible base: always check that the two match. A base station is chosen by the number of handsets it supports and the number of simultaneous calls it can handle. A repeater only extends the coverage of a base that is already in place.

What to Look For

The advertised range applies outdoors with a clear line of sight: expect around 50 metres indoors. Battery life is given as talk time and standby time, and both matter. The number of SIP accounts determines how many lines the handset can carry. Finally, a 3.5 mm headset jack or Bluetooth lets you talk hands-free while walking.
