Does the JBL Authentics 500 have a real subwoofer?
Yes, built in: a 6.5-inch (16.5 cm) down-firing subwoofer, backed by the patented SlipStream bass port, complements 3 aluminium tweeters, 25 mm each, and 3 midrange drivers, 2.75 inches each. The whole system reaches down to 40 Hz for a total power of 270 W.
Can you plug in a USB flash drive to play music from it?
USB playback is only offered on the US version; on the other versions, the USB Type-C port (5 V, 1 A) is reserved for servicing. Music therefore comes via Wi-Fi, Bluetooth 5.3, Ethernet or the 3.5 mm audio input.
How do you send sound to it from a device that has no Bluetooth?
Through the 3.5 mm audio jack input on the speaker. An Ethernet port also lets you connect it to the network by cable, as an alternative to dual-band 2.4 and 5 GHz Wi-Fi 802.11 a/b/g/n/ac/ax.
Do the Google and Alexa voice assistants work everywhere?
It handles Google Assistant and Amazon Alexa simultaneously on the same device, without having to choose one or the other. Their availability does, however, depend on the country and language, and features vary from one region to another: check that your language is supported before relying on them.
What do you need to actually listen in Dolby Atmos Music?
A compatible streaming service, accessible from the JBL One app: Dolby Atmos Music is separate content, and its availability may depend on your subscription plan. The speaker renders it in virtual Atmos over 3.1 channels, from its 270 W.
Do you need to redo a setting when you move the speaker to another room?
No. It calibrates itself automatically each time it is switched on and optimises its sound according to where it is placed. Move it from the living room to the kitchen, switch it back on, and it readjusts by itself.
Can you listen to the same music in several rooms?
Yes, by adding other JBL Authentics speakers: from the Google Home or Amazon Alexa app, you link two or more speakers to the same playlist. Alexa Multi-Room Music mode is also supported, as is Chromecast built-in.
Can you stream from an iPhone or Spotify without using Bluetooth?
Yes. Over Wi-Fi, it supports AirPlay, Chromecast built-in and Spotify Connect, as well as podcasts and high-definition internet radio. Playback continues if you leave the room or take a call, and Wi-Fi automatically brings it software updates.
How much power does it use when left in connected standby?
Less than 2 W in networked standby, that is, connected to Wi-Fi. It runs on mains power at 100–240 V, 50/60 Hz and operates within a temperature range of 0 °C to 45 °C; its power cable is included.
What is the speaker made of, and is it eco-designed?
It is made with 100% recycled fabric, 85% recycled plastic and 50% aluminium, and supplied in FSC-certified cardboard printed with soy ink. The chassis combines an aluminium frame, a custom faux leather covering and the Quadrex grille inherited from 1970s JBL speakers.
How much space does it take up, and how much does it weigh?
447 × 240 × 255.7 mm and 7.8 kg (11.4 kg with packaging): it is a speaker for a sideboard or shelf, not a model you carry around at arm's length. Its subwoofer fires downwards, beneath the chassis.
Can you adjust the bass and treble without using the app?
Yes, directly on the speaker: physical controls adjust volume, bass and treble. The JBL One app additionally gives access to the equaliser, customisation options and the built-in music services.
What is in the box, and what warranty covers the speaker?
The box contains the speaker, power cable, quick start guide, safety sheet and warranty card. The product is new and sealed; the invoice serves as the warranty document for 1 year. See the JBL datasheet (PDF).
