The link between a MIDI keyboard
and a USB port.

The UM-ONE mk2 connects an instrument fitted with MIDI ports, a keyboard, synthesizer or digital piano, to a computer or an iPad that only has USB. Everything fits in one cable: a USB plug at one end, two MIDI plugs at the other, a small unit in the middle.

Record what you play, make a synth play

In one direction, the MIDI IN cable picks up the keyboard's notes and commands to record them in music software or play a virtual instrument. In the other, the MIDI OUT cable sends the parts programmed on the computer to the synthesizer or sound module. Roland's FPT processing keeps timing tight and latency low, and three indicators, USB, MIDI IN and MIDI OUT, confirm that data is flowing.

On a computer, the driver first

With the switch on COMP, the UM-ONE mk2 works on Windows and macOS with the Roland driver, to be downloaded and installed before the first connection. It is then selected as the MIDI input or output device in the software. No separate power supply: the computer's USB port is enough.

On iPad, a powered hub

With the switch on TAB, no driver needs to be installed. The owner's manual routes the interface through the Apple camera connection kit and a mains-powered USB hub: plugged straight into the iPad, it may be unstable. The app used must support CoreMIDI, and the first-generation iPad is not supported.

The labels name the socket where each plug goes: the MIDI IN cable goes into the instrument's MIDI OUT socket, the MIDI OUT cable into its MIDI IN socket.

Frequently asked questions about this product

Do you need to install a driver for the UM-ONE mk2?
On a computer, yes: the switch is set to COMP and the driver is downloaded from the Roland website, for Windows as well as macOS. Only connect the interface once the installation is complete. On an iPad, the switch is set to TAB and no driver is needed.
Does the UM-ONE mk2 work with an iPad?
Yes, with the switch set to TAB and no driver. The owner's manual routes the interface through the Apple camera connection kit and a mains-powered USB hub, to be obtained separately: connected directly to the iPad, it may work unreliably. The first-generation iPad is not supported, and the app must support CoreMIDI.
How do you connect the MIDI IN and MIDI OUT cables?
The cable marked MIDI IN connects to the instrument's MIDI OUT port: it carries what you play to the software. The MIDI OUT cable goes to the instrument's MIDI IN port, so that the software can play it. The MIDI IN and MIDI OUT indicators light up when data passes.
What does the UM-ONE mk2 transmit?
MIDI messages, on 16 channels in each direction: what the keyboard sends when you play, and what the software sends back to drive a synthesizer or a sound module. The instrument's sound itself comes out of its own audio outputs.
What is in the UM-ONE mk2 box?
The interface, with its built-in USB, MIDI IN and MIDI OUT cables, and its owner's manual. The central unit weighs 100 g for 60.2 × 30 × 14 mm, and power comes from the USB port: there is no power adapter or separate cable to plan for.
