The fax prints without being asked

The "f" in 4103fdn stands for the fax, and it brings a consumption of a particular kind: an incoming page prints on its own. Nobody started the job, nobody was standing at the machine, and the toner went all the same — advertising included.

On a machine receiving a few faxes a day, that means several hundred pages a year, invisible in anyone's habits. Two panel settings avoid the expense: reception to memory, which stores faxes and prints them only on request, and forwarding to a network folder or an email address. On a machine where a 151A covers 3,050 pages, the difference is measured in cartridges per year.

151A or 151X depending on volume

HP recommends a monthly volume of 750 to 4,000 pages. At the ceiling, the 151A lasts three weeks and the 151X two and a half months. Both cartridges occupy the same slot and are fitted the same way; only the amount of powder changes.

The machine prints at 40 pages per minute with automatic duplex, a document feeder, a 250-sheet cassette and a 100-sheet secondary tray. It connects over Ethernet or USB, with no Wi-Fi — that is what the final "n" signals, where the 4103fdw adds wireless.

Scan rather than copy

The document feeder serves scanning as well as copying, and the two have nothing in common on the consumable side: scanning to email costs nothing, copying uses exactly as much as printing. On a multifunction with a feeder, it is generally copying that empties the cartridges, far more than printing.
