That is this machine's distinctive feature, and it reads on no sales sheet: both its trays take paper from 52 gsm, where almost every laser stops at 60. For anyone printing multipart sets, leaflets or documents to be posted by weight, the difference is not trivial.
That detail also has a reverse reading, more useful still: thin paper is the kind that folds and jams most. When a machine keeps jamming or lays down badly fused toner, the weight of the paper loaded is the first thing to check — long before suspecting the cartridge.
HP recommends a volume of 2,000 to 6,000 pages a month for this machine. At the ceiling, a 55A lasts barely a month and a 55X a little over two; at the floor, three months and six respectively. So the 55X changes nothing about the cost if both suit your pace: it changes the number of times somebody has to open the cover.
This family also covers the LaserJet P3015 and the Enterprise M525 multifunction models. An M521dw standing beside one of those models therefore shares its stock with it, which simplifies both ordering and borrowing from one machine for the other.
