The black exactly doubles on moving to XL — 1,000 then 2,000 pages. Each colour goes from 700 to 1,600: more than double. In other words, XL is proportionally more worthwhile on cyan, magenta and yellow than on black.
That is the reverse of the usual reasoning, which is to take XL in black "because it is the one that goes first" and leave the colours standard. On this machine, an office that regularly prints in colour has more to gain from moving the three colours to XL than from moving only the black.
HP gives no range here but a single upper bound: up to 1,500 pages a month. The quoted cycle, meanwhile, goes up to 25,000 — a ratio of more than sixteen between the two. The first figure is the only one describing a sustainable use; the second says what the mechanism takes occasionally.
At that 1,500-page ceiling, a 963 black is replaced one and a half times a month, a 963XL once every five and a half weeks. That is the calculation that settles the choice between the two formats, well before the price on the label.
This multifunction receives and sends faxes in colour. So an incoming document comes out on paper by default, without anyone asking, and it can draw on all four cartridges at once. On a station that receives them regularly, reception to memory or to a network folder avoids a consumption that is invisible day to day.
