How long does the Eaton 3S 850 run on battery?
20 minutes with a desktop computer, and 9 minutes with a more power-hungry PC plus an internet box. These backup times are approximate: they vary with the connected equipment, its configuration, the age of the battery and the room temperature.
Are all eight outlets powered during a power cut?
No: four French outlets are battery-backed and surge-protected, the other four are surge-protected only. So plan your connections accordingly — PC, monitor and internet box on the first four, printer and secondary peripherals on the others.
Does the UPS also protect the internet line and the phone?
Yes, a surge arrester covers the phone line and xDSL in addition to the power outlets, to the international standard IEC 61643-1. It is an often forgotten entry point: a surge coming in through the line can destroy an internet box that the UPS was nonetheless protecting on the mains side.
Can the Eaton 3S 850 be mounted on a wall?
Yes, a wall-mounting system is provided on every model in the range. It lets you get the UPS off the floor — behind a TV cabinet, under a worktop, next to the internet box enclosure — where a conventional tower UPS takes up space.
What happens if too many devices are plugged into it?
A 10 A thermal circuit breaker protects the installation and is reset with a reset button on the unit: there is no fuse to replace. Unplug the excess device before resetting, otherwise the protection will trip again immediately.
Can a phone or tablet be charged on the UPS?
Yes, the 700 and 850 VA models are fitted with two USB charging ports of 2 A maximum. They power a mobile phone or tablet without tying up one of the eight mains outlets, and without needing an extra charger.
Does the PC shut down on its own when the battery runs low?
Yes, thanks to the HID-compatible USB port and its supplied cable: the shutdown software saves your data and closes applications before the battery runs out. It is detected automatically under Windows, Linux and macOS, with no driver to look for.
Can the battery be replaced, and how do you know when?
The sealed lead-acid battery is replaceable, and an LED indicator signals when it is time to do so. The UPS tests it automatically, protects it against deep discharge and can cold start, with no mains power present.
Does this UPS correct mains voltage fluctuations?
No, it is an offline model with no AVR regulator: it passes mains power through as long as it stays within the accepted range, adjustable up to 161-284 V, and switches to battery outside it. Where the voltage rises and falls all day long, a line-interactive UPS is easier on the battery.
Can a NAS, a games console or a TV set-top box be plugged into it?
Yes: the range is aimed at PCs and their peripherals, TV, video and hi-fi equipment — home cinema, NAS, digital set-top boxes —, the internet box, games consoles and office equipment. The only ceiling is the 510 W of usable power, spread across the four battery-backed outlets.
Why are both 850 VA and 510 W quoted for the same unit?
The power factor is 0.6: 850 × 0.6 = 510 W actually available. Always size on watts rather than VA, since your equipment's consumption is measured in watts. Add up the desktop tower, the monitor and the internet box plugged into the battery-backed outlets.
Is the Eaton 3S 850 (3S850F) new and under warranty?
Yes, new equipment, with the invoice serving as the warranty document. The datasheet gives the backup times model by model, the outlet layout and the standards met (IEC 62040-1, 62040-2 C2, 62040-3 and 62040-4).
