Frequently asked questions about this product

Does this EF 50mm f/1.8 STM lens work on a Canon EOS M mirrorless camera?
Yes, with the EF-EOS M mount adapter. The box contains the lens, its two caps and the manual: the adapter is ordered separately. With its native EF mount, it fits directly on Canon digital SLRs, from the EOS 1D X Mark III and 5D Mark IV down to the 60D.
What filter size does this lens take?
49 mm: that is the diameter to ask for when buying a protective UV filter or a circular polariser. The lens measures 69.2 mm in maximum diameter and 39.3 mm in length, and its E-49 front cap is included, as is the rear dust cap.
Is the lens hood included in the box?
No. The box contains the EF 50mm f/1.8 STM lens, the E-49 lens cap, the rear dust cap and the user manual. The lens hood and a protective filter (49 mm) must therefore be ordered separately.
Can it be used for macro, to photograph small objects?
Its maximum magnification is 0.21×, which does not make it a macro lens. With a Canon extension tube, the gain is significant: 0.45× with the EF12 II and up to 0.74× with the EF25 II, the ratio then varying with the focusing distance.
Is it compatible with a Canon teleconverter?
No, the EF 50mm f/1.8 STM is not compatible with Canon teleconverters: to get a longer focal length, you will need a different lens. The EF12 II and EF25 II extension tubes, on the other hand, are designed for it and are used for close-up shots.
Can the autofocus noise be heard in videos?
No. The STM (stepping motor) is virtually silent and provides smooth, steady continuous focusing in video, without spoiling the sound of your recordings. For stills, the same motor delivers very fast focusing, so you can capture spontaneous moments.
What does f/1.8 offer compared with the zoom supplied with my camera body?
The f/1.8 aperture lets in 8 times more light than the standard zoom supplied with an EOS. In practice: sharper images indoors, less camera-shake blur, and the flash is no longer always necessary in low light. The minimum aperture, for its part, goes down to f/22.
How does it differ from the older EF 50mm f/1.8 II it replaces?
It keeps its predecessor's image quality, but gains a faster, virtually silent STM focusing motor and a sturdier build, all at a price that remains affordable.
Is it light enough to stay permanently mounted on the body?
Yes: 159 g and 39.3 mm in length, light enough to leave it on the camera or slip it into a bag pocket. Its optical design comprises 6 elements in 5 groups, with a maximum diameter of 69.2 mm.
How do I get the blurred background seen in portraits?
By shooting wide open at f/1.8: the shallow depth of field keeps the subject perfectly sharp and dissolves the background into an artistic blur. At 50 mm, you fill the frame with your subject from a comfortable distance, which explains this focal length's reputation for portraits.
What is this 50 mm lens really designed for?
Three uses above all: portraits (weddings, events, family), low light (night landscapes, fireworks, interiors) and everyday use, including street and landscape photography. Its perspective, close to that of the human eye, gives a very natural look; it is a prime lens, so you zoom with your feet.
Is the lens new and under warranty?
