Frequently asked questions about this product

Is a network cable required, or is Wi-Fi enough?
Wi-Fi is enough: it has self-healing dual-band Wi-Fi, which finds the most stable connection on its own, plus Wi-Fi Direct printing from a mobile device and Bluetooth Low Energy. Gigabit Ethernet and USB remain available if you prefer a wired connection or your network requires it.
Can I use cartridges from another brand to save money?
No. A dynamic security feature only accepts cartridges with a new or reused HP chip and blocks chips from other brands; firmware updates may even block cartridges that had been working until then. Recycled or remanufactured cartridges carrying a reused HP chip, on the other hand, do work.
How many pages do the toners in the box give, and what comes next?
The four preinstalled toners give 2,000 pages in black; the three colours are 1,000-page sample cartridges. After that, HP 230A cartridges yield 2,000 pages in black and 1,800 per colour; the high-yield 230X go up to 7,500 and 5,500 pages and bring the cost per page down significantly.
Is the USB cable included, and is there an installation CD?
Yes for the USB cable: it is in the box, along with the power cord, the 4 preinstalled toners, the reference guide and the setup card. However, no software is supplied; the drivers and the HP Smart app are downloaded from the HP website during installation, so make sure you have an Internet connection.
Can you print or scan from a USB flash drive, without a computer?
Yes: a front USB port lets you print a document from a flash drive and save a scan to it, directly from the 4.3-inch touchscreen, without switching on a computer. Files are saved as PDF, JPG or TIFF, and the machine also has two Hi-Speed USB 2.0 ports for connecting to a computer.
Does the automatic document feeder scan both sides in a single pass?
Yes: the 50-sheet feeder captures both sides in a single pass, at up to 44 images/min in black and white and 35 in colour — you never have to turn the stack over. It takes documents from 60 to 120 g/m², from 102 × 152 mm up to Legal (216 × 356 mm); the flatbed scanner, for its part, stops at A4 (216 × 297 mm).
How long does it take to print the first page when it is in sleep mode?
10.2 seconds in black from sleep, versus 9.5 seconds when it is already ready (10.5 s in colour in both cases). So you can let Auto-On/Auto-Off technology switch it off between jobs: the energy saving, at 0.8 W in sleep mode, does not cost you a noticeable wait when it wakes up.
Can a paper tray be added, and is the memory expandable?
A 550-sheet tray (part number 28N93A) adds to the standard 300 sheets and brings input capacity to 850 sheets, for a maximum of three trays and 150 sheets of output. The memory, however, is fixed at 512 MB of DRAM and 512 MB of flash: that is both the standard configuration and the machine's maximum.
Can it print envelopes and thick paper?
Yes: DL, C5 and B5 envelopes, postcards, labels, glossy, letterhead or recycled paper. The multipurpose tray holds 5 envelopes and the main tray 10, with paper weights from 60 to 176 g/m² and up to 200 g/m² with HP Color Laser glossy photo paper; the output tray takes up to 20 envelopes.
Is it noisy, and how much power does it use?
50 dB(A) sound pressure, with a quiet mode available. It draws 585 W when printing, 18 W when ready, 0.8 W in sleep mode and 0.07 W when off, for a typical consumption of 0.422 kWh per week as measured under Energy Star 3.0, with Auto-On/Auto-Off technology switching it off on its own.
How much space and handling should be planned for?
It weighs 20.41 kg (24.6 kg packaged) and takes up 421 × 543 × 384 mm with the trays extended, and 427 mm deep at minimum: plan for two people to carry it and a sturdy surface to set it on. Its operating environment ranges from 10 to 32.5 °C, with 30 to 70% non-condensing humidity.
Is it compatible with Mac, Linux and Chromebook?
Yes: Windows 10 and 11, macOS 10.15 to 13, Linux, Chrome OS, Citrix, Android and iOS, plus Windows Server, UNIX, Novell and SAP on the network side. It handles PCL 6, PCL 5e and PostScript Level 3 emulation, has 84 built-in TrueType fonts and can be managed remotely via HP Web JetAdmin.
Is a Wi-Fi printer on the company network safe?
It starts up with preconfigured HP Wolf Pro Security settings and checks the signature of its boot code every time it is switched on. On top of that come 802.1x network authentication, SNMPv3, HTTPS and optional PIN printing, which only releases a document when you are standing at the machine.
Is the HP LaserJet Pro MFP 4303fdw printer new and under warranty?
Yes: a new and genuine printer, supplied with its invoice, which serves as the warranty document for 1 year. The model carries the CE and TUV/GS marks and UL/cUL certification. All the detailed specifications are in the HP datasheet (PDF).
