Is the MSI G242L E14 panel matte or glossy?
Matte: the surface has an anti-glare coating, which greatly reduces reflections from a window or ceiling light behind you. The IPS panel also keeps colours stable up to 178° horizontally and vertically, with no shift when viewed from the side.
Which cables are supplied in the box?
The monitor comes with an HDMI cable, the power cable and the quick start guide. The DisplayPort cable is not included: make sure you have one if you plan to use the DP 1.2a input, for example to keep the HDMI input free for a console.
Can you reach 144 Hz with the supplied HDMI cable?
Yes. The HDMI 1.4b input is designed for Full HD at 144 Hz: the HDMI cable supplied in the box is enough to enjoy full smoothness from the first connection, without buying an extra cable.
From how many frames per second does Adaptive-Sync kick in?
The variable refresh range runs from 48 to 144 Hz. Below 48 frames per second, the monitor no longer matches its refresh rate to the graphics card's output.
Is the stand height-adjustable?
The supplied stand offers tilt, from -5° to +20°, the only position adjustment provided. For height or rotation, use an arm or a VESA 100 × 100 mm mount: the monitor weighs only 2.74 kg without its stand, compared with 3.1 kg with it.
Where do you plug headphones into this monitor?
A headphone output is provided at the back, alongside the HDMI 1.4b input, the DisplayPort 1.2a, the power socket and a Kensington lock slot — useful on a workstation in a shared space. All settings are controlled with a 5-way joystick.
How much power does it consume, and what is its energy class?
18 kWh/1000 h in SDR and 22 kWh/1000 h in HDR, i.e. 55 kWh per year, with 0.5 W in standby and 0.3 W when switched off. The energy class is E in SDR and F in HDR.
Is there an external power brick to tuck away under the desk?
No: the power supply is built into the monitor. A simple C13 power cable connects it to the wall socket, at 100–240 V and 50/60 Hz — no power brick to leave on the floor or hide.
Is the advertised 1 ms the panel's real response time?
You need to read both figures. 1 ms MPRT measures perceived motion sharpness; 4 ms GtG is the actual transition from one grey to another. It is this 4 ms GtG figure that describes how the IPS panel behaves.
What is its colour coverage, and at what bit depth?
It covers 88% of DCI-P3 and 111% of sRGB, for 16.7 million colours displayed in 8-bit achieved with 6-bit + FRC. Brightness reaches 300 cd/m², native contrast 1500:1 (100 million:1 dynamic), and the monitor is HDR Ready with a pixel pitch of 0.2745 mm.
Is it comfortable for long sessions in front of the screen?
It features Anti-Flicker and Less Blue Light technologies, which reduce flicker and blue light so you can play longer without eye strain. The Night Vision feature also brightens dark areas, so you can make out details in dimly lit scenes.
How much space does it take up on the desk?
540.1 × 220.1 × 407 mm including the stand, for 3.1 kg: allow about 22 cm of depth on the desktop. The chassis with very thin bezels around the panel makes it easy to line up two monitors side by side.
Is the MSI G242L E14 monitor new and under warranty?
Yes: the monitor is new, genuine and sealed in its original packaging, delivered with its invoice, which serves as the warranty document for 1 year. Full specifications are in the MSI datasheet (PDF).
