In just 143 mm of width, the Scarlett Solo brings together what a person who writes and records alone needs: a mic input, a guitar input, a headphone output with its own volume and two outputs to the speakers, all powered by the computer.

Every socket in its place
On the front, input 1 takes the guitar or keyboard on a 6.35 mm jack: the Inst button switches it from line level to instrument level, with a one-megohm impedance that respects the pickups of an electric or electro-acoustic guitar. On the rear, input 2 is a Neutrik XLR reserved for the mic, with 48 V power at the push of a button for a condenser model. The two balanced outputs go to a pair of studio monitors, and the headphones plug in at the front.

A ring of light surrounds each gain control and follows the signal live. You set the gain while playing as you would for the take, and turn it down as soon as the colour calls for it. The Focusrite Control 2 software also shows the peak reached, in dBFS, on the computer screen.

The Direct button sends the inputs to the headphones and speakers without going through the computer. You sing over your own voice without the slight lag a busy software session produces, even if that means hearing it without its effects. Air mode, for its part, only applies to the mic input: Presence brightens the voice, Presence with Harmonic Drive thickens it, the latter setting up to a 96 kHz sample rate.

Do your headphones end in a 3.5 mm jack? Get an adapter to 6.35 mm: the box of the interface on its own does not include one. Also avoid cables with a built-in mic (TRRS), which do not work well on this output.

Can I record a microphone and a guitar at the same time with the Scarlett Solo?
Yes, on two separate tracks. The mic plugs into the XLR input on the rear panel and the guitar into the 6.35 mm jack on the front, with the Inst button on to switch to instrument level. It is the setup for someone who sings while playing: each track can then be reworked separately in the software.
Can the Scarlett Solo power a condenser microphone?
Yes: the 48V button on the front sends phantom power to the XLR input, which condenser mics require. The interface draws it from the USB port itself. Its 57 dB gain range and -127 dBu input noise leave plenty of headroom, from a whispered vocal to a guitar played loud.
Does the Scarlett Solo need to be plugged into a mains socket?
No, the computer's USB-C port is enough: it carries the audio and supplies the 900 mA the interface needs, with no power adapter. A USB charger, like a phone charger, is only used in standalone mode, to use the interface without a computer. The 1 m USB-C to USB-A cable is in the box.
What is the Scarlett Solo's Air mode for?
It gives the mic input preamp two different colours. One press of Air turns on Presence, green LED: the top end lifts and a voice or an acoustic guitar moves to the front of the mix. A second press adds Harmonic Drive, amber LED: harmonics thicken the take, up to a 96 kHz sample rate. A third press returns the preamp to neutral.
What is the Scarlett Solo's Loopback?
Two virtual inputs that send the audio playing on the computer back into the recording software, without any cable. They are used to sample a clip, put together a podcast mixing voice and music, stream live or capture the sound of an on-screen video tutorial. Hence the 4 simultaneous inputs and 2 outputs.
Which headphones can I plug into the Scarlett Solo?
Headphones with a 6.35 mm stereo (TRS) jack, or a 3.5 mm jack with an adapter, with an impedance of up to 300 ohms. The output delivers 32 mW into 33 ohms and keeps its own volume, independent of the speakers. Headsets with a mic or remote on the cable, wired TRRS, may not work properly.
Which software comes with the Scarlett Solo?
Three recording applications, Ableton Live Lite, Pro Tools Intro+ and Cubase LE, along with the Hitmaker Expansion bundle: Melodyne Essential, Addictive Drums 2, Addictive Keys, MASSIVE and three months of Splice Sounds. They are available from your Focusrite account once the interface is registered, along with the Focusrite Control 2 settings app.
What is the difference between the Scarlett Solo and the 4th Gen Scarlett 2i2?
The Solo has one mic preamp and one line/instrument input; the 2i2 has two channels that each accept a mic or an instrument. The 2i2 adds Auto Gain and Clip Safe, and goes up to 69 dB of gain versus 57. For a voice and a guitar, the Solo is enough; for two mics at once, you need the 2i2.
Does the Scarlett Solo work without a computer?
Yes, in standalone mode: powered by a USB charger, it passes the audio from its inputs to the headphones and line outputs, with direct monitoring on. You can play guitar through studio monitors without switching on the computer, or add a mic preamp to a mixer that only has line inputs left.
