The Scarlett 2i2 lines up two complete channels, each with its own mic preamp and instrument input, and an interface that sets the gain itself before the take, then keeps an eye on it during it.

A mic or an instrument on each channel
Each channel has two doors: an XLR on the rear for the mic, a 6.35 mm jack on the front for guitar, bass or keyboard. Plugging in the jack cuts off the XLR of the same channel, so you choose, channel by channel, what goes in. Two voices, a voice and a guitar, or a synth in stereo: all three setups fit on the same interface, each source on its own track.
On the front: two gains, two jacks, the Select, 48V, Inst, Auto, Safe and Air buttons, then Output, Direct and the headphones.
On the rear: the lock slot, the 5 V socket, the USB-C port, the two outputs and the two XLRs.Gain set while you sing
Select picks the channel, Auto starts a ten-second countdown drawn by the halo: you sing or play as you would for the take, and the interface chooses the gain taking into account its own noise, digital silence and crosstalk between channels. Green, it is set; red, check the connection or the 48 V. Clip Safe then takes over and pulls the gain back as soon as a passage threatens to clip.

On the 2i2, Air mode works on the mic, line and instrument inputs. One press gives Presence, green LED, which brings a voice or an acoustic guitar forward; a second adds Harmonic Drive, amber LED, to thicken a guitar or a voice, up to a 96 kHz sample rate; a third returns the preamp to neutral.
Enough power, even away from the desk
The USB-C port is enough with most computers. If yours cannot supply 1.5 A, the second USB-C socket, marked 5V DC, takes a phone charger: the interface then draws its power from the mains. The same socket is used for standalone mode, where the 2i2 becomes a dual preamp for a mixer that has run out of mic inputs.

No sound from the mic on channel 1? Check that no cable is left in front jack 1: it cuts off the XLR of the same channel. And the 48V button powers both XLRs at once.

Can I record two microphones at the same time with the Scarlett 2i2?
Yes: the 2i2 has two preamps and two XLR inputs on the rear, recorded to two separate tracks. A vocal duet, a two-person podcast or an acoustic guitar captured with two mics need no extra gear. The 48V button then powers both inputs together, for condenser mics.
How does the Scarlett 2i2's Auto Gain work?
Choose the channel with Select, press Auto, then sing or play as you would for the take during the 10-second countdown drawn by the gain halo. The interface then sets the gain: the halo turns green if it succeeded, red if not. The gain control can still be used to fine-tune by hand.
What is the Scarlett 2i2's Clip Safe for?
To save the take when the sound gets louder than expected. Turned on with the Safe button, it lowers the preamp gain as soon as the signal gets close to clipping, the distortion that makes a take unusable. A shouted chorus or a hard pick attack no longer means recording again.
Does the Scarlett 2i2 need a power adapter?
Not with most computers: the USB-C port carries the audio and supplies 900 mA. A second 5 V USB-C socket on the rear is used when the computer cannot deliver 1.5 A, and for standalone mode; a phone USB charger will do, it is not in the box, which contains the 1 m USB-C to USB-A cable.
Where do I plug a guitar or a keyboard into the Scarlett 2i2?
Into the two 6.35 mm jacks on the front: Inst button on for a guitar or a bass, a Hi-Z input of 1 megohm, off for a keyboard or a synth at line level. A plugged-in jack disables the XLR of the same channel: each channel takes either a mic or an instrument.
What are the Scarlett 2i2's Loopback inputs for?
To record the computer's own audio: two virtual inputs pick up what your software plays and send it back into the recording, without a cable. Useful for re-recording a sample, mixing music and voice for a podcast, live streaming or adding sound to a video tutorial. They bring the total to 4 inputs × 2 outputs.
Which headphones should I use with the Scarlett 2i2?
Stereo headphones with a 6.35 mm TRS jack, or 3.5 mm with an adapter, up to 300 ohms. The output delivers 32 mW into 33 ohms and 22 mW into 300 ohms, with a volume separate from the speakers. A TRRS cable, the kind found on headsets with a built-in mic, may not work properly.
Which software comes with the Scarlett 2i2?
Ableton Live Lite, Pro Tools Intro+ and Cubase LE for recording, and the Hitmaker Expansion bundle for producing: Melodyne Essential, Addictive Drums 2, Addictive Keys, MASSIVE, three months of Splice Sounds. Everything downloads from your Focusrite account after registering the interface, like Focusrite Control 2.
Can the Scarlett 2i2 be used without a computer?
Yes, in standalone mode: connected to a USB charger through its 5 V socket or its USB port, it sends its inputs to the headphones and line outputs as soon as direct monitoring is on. It then works as a dual preamp for a mixer or another interface that only has free line inputs left.
