The grain of a 610, with no tube to warm up
The Vintage button switches in a fully analogue stage that recreates the colour of the UA 610 tube preamp, the one in Universal Audio's studio consoles. It works on mic as well as line or instrument sources and is set with the gain: start from the minimum, raise it until you hear the saturation, then back off a little to keep only a discreet grain. When on, it lights orange.
A 76 compressor already set up
The 76 compressor, also analogue, is inspired by the 1176 limiter. No attack or release knob: three presets at a 6:1 ratio cover everyday uses, and a fourth press switches it off. A fixed make-up gain raises the level as soon as it is active, so the gain needs resetting afterwards.
- VOCAttack 2 ms, release 300 ms: a smoothed voice, with no jolts.
- GTRAttack 1.5 ms, release 700 ms: the pick attack gets through, the note sustains.
- FASTAttack 30 µs, release 35 ms: the firmest compression of the three.

The combo input takes an XLR plug or a 6.35 mm jack. In XLR, the preamp offers 55 dB of gain and the 48 V phantom power a condenser mic needs; in jack, the INST button switches the input to high impedance, 1 MΩ, for a passive guitar or bass, and stays off for a keyboard. Headphones plug in next to it, on a 6.35 mm jack with their own volume.
At the back: speakers, MIDI and backup power
Two balanced TRS monitor outputs feed a pair of active speakers. The MIDI In and Out sockets, in 5-pin DIN format, take a master keyboard or drive a synthesizer, with no separate MIDI interface. The USB-C port, running USB 2.0, is enough to power the unit; the 5 V DC input takes over on a port that is too weak, with the supplied USB-A to barrel cable.
Hear yourself sing with no delay
The Direct button sends the input to the headphones and speakers through the interface itself, bypassing the software's buffer: no latency, whatever buffer size is chosen in the recording software. You then mute the track's monitoring in that software so as not to hear the signal twice.
From Mac to iPad, with no driver to hunt for
Class compliant, the Volt 176 works on macOS 11 or later and on iPad or iPhone running iOS 14, with no driver. On 64-bit Windows 10 or 11, the UA Connect app installs the ASIO driver. The same app registers the interface and unlocks LUNA, Universal Audio's digital audio workstation, with a bundle of UAD plug-ins for Mac and PC.

The Monitor outputs are not amplified: they need active speakers or an amplifier. Headphones with a 3.5 mm plug need an adapter to 6.35 mm.

Does the Volt 176 need a mains power supply?
No when the USB port meets the USB 2.0 standard: the Volt 176 is powered through the supplied USB cable. A 5 V DC input (5.5 × 2.1 mm barrel, centre positive) takes over if the port or hub is too weak, or to spare an iPad's battery: the USB-A to barrel cable is included, to plug into a USB charger. In typical use, the interface draws 2.3 W.
What is the Vintage button on the Volt 176 for?
It switches in a fully analogue stage that recreates the colour of the UA 610 tube preamp. It works on the mic, line or instrument input and lights orange when active. It is set with the gain: raise it until you hear the saturation, then back off a little for a more discreet grain. It can be combined with the 76 compressor.
How do you choose the 76 compressor preset?
Each press cycles through VOC, GTR, FAST and OFF. VOC attacks in 2 ms and releases in 300 ms for a smoothed voice, GTR lets the attack through (1.5 ms / 700 ms) and extends sustain, FAST (30 µs / 35 ms) compresses hard. The ratio is 6:1 and a fixed make-up gain raises the level: reset the gain after switching it on.
Can you plug an electric guitar directly into the Volt 176?
Yes. Plug it with a 6.35 mm jack into the front combo input and press INST (green light): the input switches to high impedance, 1 MΩ, suited to a passive guitar or bass. The Vintage preamp and the 76 compressor also work on this input, the GTR preset being designed for it. For a keyboard or a sound module, INST stays off.
Does the Volt 176 work with an iPad or an iPhone?
Yes, on iOS 14 or later: the interface is class compliant, with no driver to install. An iPad with a USB-C port connects with a USB-C cable, others with the Apple Lightning to USB Camera Adapter. The supplied software, LUNA included, does not run on iOS: it is for Mac and PC. The 5 V DC input avoids draining the device's battery.
What software comes with the Volt 176?
The LUNA digital audio workstation and the UAD Explore FREE plug-in bundle, activated by registering the interface on a Universal Audio account with the UA Connect app. These licences cannot be transferred to another user. On Windows, UA Connect also installs the interface's ASIO driver; macOS needs none.
Can you connect a condenser microphone to it?
Yes: the 48V button sends phantom power to the XLR input. Its light blinks red while powering up, then stays steady. Switch the 48 V off before plugging in or unplugging the mic. A dynamic mic does not need it, and some ribbon mics can be harmed by it. The 48 V only acts on the combo's XLR socket.
Can you connect passive speakers to the Monitor outputs?
No: the monitor outputs are not amplified. They expect active speakers or an amplifier, connected with 6.35 mm jacks, preferably balanced TRS to limit interference over cable runs. The Monitor knob sets their volume, independently of the headphones, which receive the same signal. Their maximum level reaches 15 dBu.
How do you hear yourself sing with no delay?
With the DIRECT button (blue light): the input is sent back to the headphones and speakers by the interface itself, with no latency, bypassing the software's buffer. Then mute the track's monitoring in the software, otherwise the signal arrives twice and sounds hollow. The computer's sound remains audible in all cases.
