The processing happens in the interface
The UAD-2 DUO Core DSP brings together two SHARC processors housed in the unit. In UAD Console, you insert a UAD preamp, compressor or equalizer on an input and monitor yourself through it with a 1.1 ms analogue round trip at 96 kHz, with no extra latency even with four Legacy plug-ins in series. At the mixing stage, the same plug-ins open in your recording software in VST, AU and AAX 64 formats: the computer's processor stays free.
The microphone, the interface, the computer: real-time processing stays on the Apollo side.Two preamps that change character
Each channel combines XLR and a 6.35 mm jack on the back, with gain from +10 to +65 dB, 48 V phantom power switchable input by input, a 20 dB pad, a 75 Hz low-cut filter, polarity inversion and stereo linking. With Unison, a preamp plug-in loaded on the input adapts the input stage, impedance included, to the emulated model. The Hi-Z input on the front, reserved for channel 1, takes a guitar or bass and works the same way with amp and pedal emulations. UAD Console adds Auto-Gain to set levels.
Conversion measured output by output
The Gen 2 generation reworked the analogue conversion, above all on the listening side. Universal Audio publishes a measurement for each connector, in 24-bit up to 192 kHz:

The Apollo Monitor Correction listening correction, designed with Sonarworks, can then calibrate the speakers and headphones, provided you acquire the licence for the SoundID software and, for speakers, a measurement microphone.
A monitor controller on your desk
The large Level knob changes role according to the chosen mode: in Preamp, it sets the gain of the selected channel; in Monitor, the speaker or headphone volume, each independently. Six buttons then give Talk for the built-in talkback mic, Dim, Alt to switch to a second pair of speakers, Mono and Mute. The front headphone output delivers 69 mW into 300 Ω.
Room to grow
The TOSLINK optical input takes an external preamp in ADAT, that is up to 8 channels at 44.1 or 48 kHz, 4 at 88.2 or 96 kHz and 2 at 176.4 or 192 kHz, or an S/PDIF pair up to 96 kHz. Over Thunderbolt, up to four Apollo units can be chained, only one of them a desktop model. Without a computer, the interface keeps its latest input and monitoring settings in memory and works as a small mixing console.

Plan for a Thunderbolt 3 cable, recognisable by its lightning bolt: it is not included, and an ordinary USB-C cable will not do, even though the plug is identical. The interface is not powered through this cable, so the power supply stays connected. On a Mac with a Thunderbolt 1 or 2 port, use Apple's Thunderbolt 3 to Thunderbolt 2 adapter; on Windows, these ports are not supported.

Does the Apollo Twin X DUO Gen 2 work on Mac and PC?
Yes. It supports macOS 11 Big Sur to macOS 26 Tahoe and 64-bit Windows 10 or 11, as long as the computer has a Thunderbolt 3, 4 or 5 port. On an older Mac, a Thunderbolt 1 or 2 port works with Apple's Thunderbolt 3 to Thunderbolt 2 adapter; on Windows, these older ports are not supported, and neither is Windows on an ARM processor.
Is a Thunderbolt cable included with the Apollo Twin X Gen 2?
No, you need to provide a Thunderbolt 3 cable, recognisable by its lightning-bolt icon: an ordinary USB-C cable will not do, even though the plug has the same shape. The box contains the interface, its external power supply, the mains cord and a getting-started card. The interface is never powered over Thunderbolt: the power supply with its locking plug stays connected.
What does the DUO Core DSP of the Apollo Twin X do?
Two SHARC processors housed inside the interface run the UAD plug-ins instead of the computer. While recording, in UAD Console, you hear yourself through a UAD preamp, compressor or equalizer with a 1.1 ms round trip at 96 kHz, with no latency added by four Legacy plug-ins. At the mixing stage, the same plug-ins open in your recording software in VST, AU and AAX 64 formats.
Which UAD plug-ins come with the Essentials+ edition?
Once the interface is registered on a Universal Audio account, the Essentials+ edition gives access to a bundle of UAD plug-ins that notably includes the UA 610-A and 610-B preamps, the Precision Channel Strip, the Fairchild 670, Teletronix LA-2A and UA 1176 compressors in their Legacy versions, the Pultec EQP-1A and Pultec Pro equalizers, and the Pure Plate reverb. Other titles from the UAD catalogue are sold separately.
Can you plug a guitar straight into the Apollo Twin X Gen 2?
Yes, through the Hi-Z input on the front, with a mono 6.35 mm jack. As soon as a cable is plugged in, it takes over from the mic and line inputs of channel 1, with a default impedance of 1 MΩ and gain adjustable from +10 to +65 dB. Unison technology then lets you play through amp and pedal emulations while recording, with no noticeable delay.
How can you add inputs to the Apollo Twin X Gen 2?
Through its TOSLINK optical input, set to ADAT or S/PDIF in UAD Console. In ADAT, an external preamp adds up to 8 channels at 44.1 or 48 kHz, 4 at 88.2 or 96 kHz and 2 at 176.4 or 192 kHz; in S/PDIF, one stereo pair up to 96 kHz. You can also chain up to four Apollo units over Thunderbolt, only one of which may be a desktop model.
What do you need to use Apollo Monitor Correction?
This listening correction, designed with Sonarworks, calibrates the interface's monitor and headphone outputs. It requires a licence for Sonarworks' SoundID software, which is not in the box, and UAD Console. To correct speakers you also need a measurement microphone; for headphones, a profile is enough. On Mac, macOS 11 Big Sur is the minimum, and an internet connection is used to validate the licence.
How does it differ from the Apollo Twin X USB?
The Gen 2 connects over Thunderbolt 3 and runs on macOS as well as Windows; the Apollo Twin X USB is limited to Windows over USB 3. The Gen 2 states 129 dB of dynamic range on its monitor outputs versus 127 dB, and adds Auto-Gain, Plug-In Scenes, bass management and Apollo Monitor Correction to UAD Console. Both keep two Unison preamps and a DUO Core DSP.
