Frequently asked questions about this product

Does the HP LaserJet Enterprise MFP M480f have built-in Wi-Fi?
No: it connects via 10/100/1000T Gigabit Ethernet or Hi-Speed USB 2.0. Wireless can be added as an option with the HP Jetdirect 3100w (3JN69A) accessory, which provides dual-band Wi-Fi, Wi-Fi Direct, BLE and NFC Touch-to-print.
Is a connection cable included in the box?
No, the USB cable must be purchased separately. The box contains the printer, the four genuine HP LaserJet toners (black, cyan, magenta, yellow), the getting started guide and a power cable.
How many pages do the toners supplied with the machine last, and can I switch to high capacity?
The supplied toners last approximately 2,400 pages in black and 2,100 pages per colour. To replace them less often, the machine takes HP 415X high-capacity toners: 7,500 pages in black (W2030X) and 6,000 pages per colour (W2031X, W2032X, W2033X), nearly three times the yield.
Is duplex printing automatic on this model?
Yes, and it is even enabled by default to save paper. The built-in duplex unit delivers up to 24 images per minute in black and colour alike, versus 27 ppm single-sided. It accepts paper from 60 to 163 g/m², slightly less than the 176 g/m² accepted by tray 1.
Does the document feeder scan both sides in a single pass?
Yes. The 50-sheet automatic document feeder scans both sides in a single pass, with no need to feed the stack through again. Allow for up to 46 ipm in black and 35 in colour on double-sided A4 documents. The flatbed scanner remains available for fragile or bound originals.
How is the 300-sheet paper capacity split, and can more be added?
It is split between a 50-sheet multipurpose tray and a second 250-sheet tray; the output tray holds 150 sheets. The machine takes up to three trays: the 550-sheet CF404A paper tray/feeder can be added as an option, for 850 sheets loaded.
Can it scan directly to email or a network folder, without going through a PC?
Yes, as standard: scan to email (SMTP over SSL), to a network folder, to a USB flash drive, to SharePoint or via FTP, with a local address book. Blank page removal, automatic content cropping and compact PDF are also built in.
Does the 55,000-page duty cycle mean you can print that many pages every month?
No. The 55,000 A4 pages are the maximum monthly duty cycle. The recommended volume is 900 to 4,800 pages per month: that is the range to look at when sizing the machine. The recommended scanning volume is the same.
Can it print on envelopes, labels or heavy paper?
Yes. Tray 1 accepts B5, ISO C5, C6 and ISO DL envelopes, postcards, labels and custom sizes from 76 × 127 to 216 × 356 mm. As for paper weight: 60 to 176 g/m², and up to 200 g/m² with postcards and HP Color Laser glossy photo paper.
What actually protects this printer from network attacks?
Three built-in mechanisms: the BIOS is verified at every start-up and self-heals if it has been tampered with, the firmware is checked to be authentic and digitally signed by HP, and outgoing network connections are inspected to block suspicious requests. On top of that comes Common Criteria certification for memory monitoring.
Is this multifunction printer energy-efficient?
It is ENERGY STAR and Blue Angel certified, and duplex enabled by default cuts paper use from the outset. Wake-up from sleep is quick: the first page comes out in 11 seconds in black and 12.1 seconds in colour, so sleep mode can stay on without inconveniencing users.
Can memory be added to the M480f?
No: the 2 GB installed is also the machine's maximum. It handles print job storage and secure PIN printing, with an 800 MHz processor; fax memory, for its part, depends on the available disk space.
How much space is needed to install it?
Allow 415.4 × 472 × 399.8 mm at minimum, and up to 1,124.4 mm deep with the printer fully open: this clearance must be kept free for servicing. It weighs 23.2 kg, 26.34 kg with packaging.
Is the printer new and under warranty?
Yes: the HP LaserJet Enterprise MFP M480f (3QA55A) is new in its original packaging, supplied with its invoice, which serves as the warranty document for 1 year. Full specifications are in the manufacturer's datasheet (PDF).
