Is a single CPE710 enough to link two buildings?
No: a point-to-point link is set up with two CPEs, one at each end, pointing at each other. To serve several sites, you install a base station fitted with a sector antenna and one client CPE per site, in point-to-multipoint. Its 23 dBi directional antenna concentrates the signal into a narrow beam.
Do you need a power socket at the top of the mast to power it?
No. It is powered by 24 V passive PoE through the network cable itself, up to 60 metres away, thanks to the injector included in the package. Only one cable therefore runs up to the antenna, for both data and power. It draws 24 V DC / 0.5 A.
Is the CPE710's network port limited to 100 Mbps like on entry-level models?
No: it has a shielded 10/100/1000 Mbps Gigabit Ethernet port, whereas the CPE210, CPE220, CPE510, CPE605 and CPE610 stop at 10/100 Mbps. The wired link therefore does not throttle the 867 Mbps of the wireless link. This same port serves as the PoE power input: a single cable is enough.
Can you really count on 867 Mbps between the two sites?
The 867 Mbps is the maximum physical data rate on an 80 MHz channel under the 802.11ac standard. Usable throughput depends on the real-world environment: obstacles and materials, local interference, traffic density and the quality of the equipment at the other end. The 20 and 40 MHz widths remain selectable if the spectrum is congested.
How do you correctly align the two antennas once they are installed up high?
The PharOS firmware includes an antenna alignment tool, a spectrum analysis to spot free channels, a throughput test, ping and traceroute. You correct the orientation by reading the signal strength, noise and transmission CCQ live.
Can it withstand rain, frost and high heat?
Yes: a housing in PC plastic stabilised for outdoor use, IP65 protection against water and dust, and operation from -40 to 70 °C at 10 to 90% non-condensing humidity. It is designed to stay exposed all year round.
Is it protected against lightning and electrostatic discharge?
The Pharos series states 15 kV ESD protection and 6 kV lightning protection. Note: these are only effective with proper earthing and shielded cables. On an exposed mast, have the installation checked by a professional.
Can it act as an access point or a router, not just a bridge?
Yes: it operates in AP, Client, AP Router or Client Router (WISP) mode, with a static, dynamic or PPPoE WAN connection. In AP mode, it handles multi-SSID with VLAN tagging, bandwidth control, MAC address filtering and an SPI firewall. Static routing and IP-MAC binding are also available.
Can all 5 GHz channels be used everywhere?
The CPE710 covers the 5.15 - 5.85 GHz band and supports dynamic frequency selection (DFS). The frequencies actually available and the maximum transmit power allowed depend on the regulations of the country of installation; power can be adjusted in 1 dBm steps to stay within the limits.
What is in the CPE710 package?
It includes the outdoor CPE, the 24 V passive PoE adapter, its mains power cord, the mounting kits for the mast and the quick installation guide. You will need to provide the outdoor Ethernet cable that will connect the antenna to the injector.
How do you manage several CPEs on the same network?
Each unit is configured from its PharOS web interface over HTTP/HTTPS, and the Pharos Control software manages the whole fleet from a single PC: device discovery, status monitoring, firmware updates and maintenance. SSH, SNMP v2c, system log and Ping Watch Dog are also available.
Is the CPE710 new and under warranty?
Yes: new equipment in its original packaging, supplied with its invoice, which serves as the 1-year warranty. It is CE, FCC and RoHS certified, with IP65 protection. Full details are in the Pharos datasheet (PDF).
