Can the NanoBeam 5AC Gen2 be powered by an 802.3af or at PoE switch?
No. It runs on 24 V passive PoE, outside the 802.3af/at standard: an off-the-shelf PoE switch port will not start it. The 24 V - 0.5 A Gigabit injector designed for it is included in the box, with its mains cord. Power consumption, for its part, peaks at 8.5 W, which remains well below the budget of an ordinary PoE port.
What is the second Ethernet port of the NanoBeam 5AC Gen2 for?
To pass power on to another device. The main port receives power from the injector, the second sends it on to a nearby device: a camera or a second radio can thus be connected without running an additional cable back to the equipment room. Both ports are Gigabit 10/100/1000.
How do you aim the NanoBeam 5AC Gen2 at the antenna opposite?
By hand, on its 3-axis ball joint, then you fine-tune with the four signal strength LEDs. Their thresholds are set in airOS 8 to the RSSI values expected for your link: you narrow the steps, then turn the antenna until the last LED lights up, without checking the interface between each adjustment.
Do you need a computer at the top of the mast to configure the NanoBeam 5AC Gen2?
No. A Wi-Fi management radio, separate from the 5 GHz radio that carries the link, is built into the device: it transmits on 2.4 GHz, and the UNMS app, on iOS or Android, opens the airOS interface directly from a phone. Setup is therefore done at the foot of the mount, without a service cable.
Is the mast mounting kit supplied with the NanoBeam 5AC Gen2?
Yes, and mast mounting requires no screws: the part clips on. Wall mounting, on the other hand, requires an anchor screw that does not come with the product. Two accessories are available separately: the NBE-WMK reinforced wall mount kit and the NBE-19-WM suction cup mount, for installation behind a window.
Which channel widths does the NanoBeam 5AC Gen2 support?
From 10 to 80 MHz in point-to-point, but only 10 to 40 MHz in point-to-multipoint. The maximum width is therefore only available on a dedicated link between two devices; as soon as a station serves several clients, the channel is capped at 40 MHz and throughput is set by this constraint.
Where do the 450 Mbps of real-world throughput quoted for the NanoBeam 5AC Gen2 come from?
From the 256QAM modulation of the airMAX ac protocol, whereas the previous airMAX generation stopped at 64QAM. The TCP/IP throughput actually measured thus rises from about 150 Mbps to more than 450 Mbps. On top of that comes TDMA scheduling, which gives each client its own transmit window.
Can you analyse the 5 GHz spectrum without cutting the live link?
Yes. An independent processor and a second radio continuously scan the entire 5 GHz band: the airView analyser runs in the background and the link stays up during the measurement. You get constellation diagrams, the signal-to-noise ratio and the ambient noise without renting a spectrum analyser.
Does the NanoBeam 5AC Gen2 serve only as a client, or can it be the base station?
Both. airOS 8 offers a point-to-multipoint access point mode in mixed airMAX and a long-range point-to-point link mode. On a distribution network, you therefore find it both as subscriber equipment and facing a second NanoBeam, to connect two buildings with a dedicated link.
How does the NanoBeam 5AC Gen2 cope on a rooftop, in sun and wind?
Its plastic housing is UV-stabilised and it operates from -40 to 80 °C, at 5 to 95% humidity, non-condensing. It withstands winds of 200 km/h and has passed salt fog, driving rain, vibration, thermal shock and ultraviolet ageing tests: a seaside site falls within its operating range.
How much space and weight should you allow for installing the NanoBeam 5AC Gen2?
189 × 189 × 125 mm and 530 g, mount included. It is a compact disc, discreet enough to blend into a façade, and its measured wind load — 45.4 N at 200 km/h — remains modest: a light mast is enough where a dish would require a guyed support.
Is the NanoBeam 5AC Gen2 new and under warranty?
Yes, new equipment, with the invoice serving as the warranty document. The device has built-in ±24 kV electrostatic discharge protection, for both contact and air discharge, and complies with CE, FCC and IC markings. The full manufacturer document is available as a PDF.
