Is the film supplied with the Instax Mini 12?
No, instax mini film is sold separately. It is the film that produces the 62 × 46 mm credit-card-size prints: plan on at least one pack along with the camera. An instax mini pack contains 10 exposures.
Do you need to buy batteries, and which ones?
Plan on 2 AA (LR6) alkaline batteries: the ones supplied with the camera are test batteries, to be replaced as soon as they run out. A set of new alkaline batteries lasts about 10 packs of 10-exposure film, i.e. around a hundred photos, with performance varying by brand. Manganese batteries must not be used.
How do you switch the camera on and go into close-up mode?
Everything is done with the lens: you turn it once to switch on the camera, and a second time to activate close-up mode, intended for distances of 30 to 50 cm. Beyond that, stay in normal mode: focusing covers from 0.3 m onwards. The camera switches itself off after 5 minutes of non-use.
How far away should you stand to get a good photo in the evening?
The flash range is 0.3 to 2.2 m: move closer to the group to stay within this range. It fires every time and adjusts its own intensity, with slow sync in low light; allow 7 seconds maximum of recycle time between two photos with new batteries.
How do you frame a selfie without cutting off your head?
Use the selfie mirror next to the lens: if you can see yourself in it, you are in the photo. The flash adjusts its intensity automatically, including in close-up mode, which avoids overexposed faces at arm's length. The viewfinder, for its part, corrects parallax as soon as this mode is activated.
Are there any exposure settings to make before pressing the shutter?
None. Exposure is fully automatic (levels 5.0 to 14.5 at ISO 800): the shutter speed, between 1/2 and 1/250 s, and the flash output adapt by themselves to the ambient light. You frame, you shoot, and the print is ejected automatically.
How long does the photo take to appear?
About 90 seconds, a time that varies with the ambient temperature. The 62 × 46 mm print is ejected automatically as soon as the shot is taken and then develops by itself.
How can you tell whether there is any film left in the camera?
Two indicators are provided: an exposure counter that shows the prints remaining and a check window that confirms a cartridge is present in the body.
Can you get digital versions of your Instax photos?
Yes, with the INSTAX UP! app: it scans your prints in high resolution, organises them into a collection and lets you share them on social networks. Your paper photos are then also kept as files, in one place.
Does the viewfinder really show what I will get on the print?
It comes close: it is a real-image viewfinder with 0.37× magnification and a target spot, truer to the result than on previous models, and it corrects parallax — the offset between the axis of the viewfinder and that of the lens — as soon as close-up mode is activated.
Is the camera new and under warranty?
Yes: the Instax Mini 12 Purple is new and sealed in its original packaging, supplied with its invoice, which serves as the 1-year warranty document. The body measures 104 × 66.6 × 122 mm and weighs 306 g on its own, excluding batteries, strap and film — the film remaining a consumable to be bought separately.
