Is the DC5200's 8× zoom optical?
No, it is digital: magnification is done by cropping into the image from the 21 MP CMOS sensor, so the further the zoom is pushed, the more resolution is lost. The anti-shake function limits camera-shake blur, and framing is done on the 2.4-inch TFT screen.
Is a memory card essential straight out of the box?
Yes: the built-in memory only stores test photos, at 3 MP. You therefore need an SD card, accepted up to 64 GB, to save your photos at the full 21 MP resolution and your HD videos. It is best to add one to your order so you can use the camera straight away.
Does it work with AA batteries?
No: power is supplied by a lithium battery, not by disposable batteries. The camera is rated to operate from 0 to 40 °C.
Does it have a viewfinder in addition to the screen?
No, there is no optical viewfinder: framing is done entirely on the 2.4-inch TFT LCD screen, which also displays the menus, the seven Scene modes and the exposure settings.
How do you get photos onto a computer or a printer?
Via the USB 2.0 port, to a computer running Windows XP, Vista, 7 or Mac. The camera also supports direct printing to a compatible printer. However, it has no TV output for viewing on a television.
Up to what resolution does it film?
Up to HD 1280 × 720, with 640 × 480 and 320 × 240 also available. Videos are saved as AVI and photos as JPEG, with sound picked up by the built-in microphone.
Can you choose a lower resolution to store more photos?
Yes, thirteen resolutions are available, from 21 MP (5616 × 3744) down to VGA (640 × 480), with steps at 16, 12, 10, 8 and 5 MP. Two 16:9 wide formats are also provided, 7M HD (3648 × 2048) and 2M HD (1920 × 1080).
How does it perform in a dark interior or at night?
Sensitivity tops out at ISO 400 (auto, 100, 200 or 400): that is the limit to be aware of. The Night, Night Portrait and High Sensitivity modes, exposure compensation of −3 to +3 EV and the flash (auto, forced, red-eye reduction or off) are there to compensate.
Can burst mode be used to photograph a child on the move?
With a major limitation: burst mode is limited to 6 frames in VGA (640 × 480), so at low resolution. For a sharp photo at full resolution, smile capture and the 2, 5 or 10-second self-timer are better suited.
Do you need to know about photography to use it?
No. Auto mode adapts the shot to each situation by itself, and the Landscape, Portrait, Night, Night Portrait, High Sensitivity and Beach presets cover the rest. Face detection guarantees good image quality without having to be a settings pro.
Does this reference really correspond to the red model?
Yes. EAN code 3760265540761 identifies the DC5200 Red. The body also comes in black (3760265540747), silver, pink and blue, each with its own code: check it if the colour matters to you.
Is the camera new and under warranty?
Yes: it is new and sealed in its original packaging, supplied with its invoice, which serves as the 1-year warranty document. All the resolutions, modes and settings are detailed in the AgfaPhoto datasheet (PDF).
