Designed for Windows, and Windows only
The Apollo Twin X USB connects to a built-in USB 3 port on a PC running 64-bit Windows 10 or 11, ideally linked to an Intel controller. It does not work with a Mac or with Windows on an ARM processor, and USB 3 expansion cards are not tested by Universal Audio. Its USB-C socket expects a certified USB 3 SuperSpeed cable of 2 metres at most, to be provided, and its 12 V power supply with locking plug powers it: the USB port is not enough.
The DSP works, the PC breathes
The two SHARC processors of the UAD-2 DUO Core DSP run the UAD plug-ins inside the interface. In UAD Console, you record through a preamp or compressor with a 1.1 ms round trip at 96 kHz, whatever buffer size your recording software uses. At the mixing stage, the same plug-ins open in that software in VST and AAX formats. For more power, a UAD-2 Satellite USB can be added, within the limit of two UAD-2 devices over USB.
Real-time processing stays in the Apollo, not in the PC's processor.Five classics with the Heritage edition
A new interface, registered online on a Universal Audio account, receives the five titles of the Heritage Edition, four of which also exist as UAD Native versions for the computer. The Realtime Analog Classics bundle is added on top.

Preamps, guitar and monitoring on the front
The two XLR and jack combo inputs on the back go through Unison preamps adjustable from +10 to +65 dB, with 48 V phantom power per input, a 20 dB pad, a 75 Hz low-cut, polarity inversion and stereo linking. On the front, the channel 1 Hi-Z input takes a guitar or bass, and the headphone output has its own volume. Monitor mode gives the built-in talkback mic, Dim, Alt, Mono and Mute, like a monitor controller.
Eight more channels through the optical input
The TOSLINK input on the back accepts an external preamp in ADAT, up to 8 channels at 44.1 or 48 kHz, 4 at 88.2 or 96 kHz and 2 at 176.4 or 192 kHz, or an S/PDIF pair up to 96 kHz. Disconnected from the PC, the interface keeps its latest settings and goes on serving as a small mixing console.

This version is not compatible with macOS: on a Mac, you need a Thunderbolt Apollo. The USB 3 cable is not in the box; choose a certified SuperSpeed model, Type-A or Type-C to Type-C, no longer than 2 metres.

Does the Apollo Twin X USB work with a Mac?
No, this USB version is reserved for 64-bit Windows 10 or 11, on a PC with a built-in USB 3 port, ideally connected to an Intel USB controller. Windows on an ARM processor is not compatible, and USB 3 expansion cards are not tested. For a Mac, Universal Audio offers Thunderbolt Apollo interfaces, including the Apollo Twin X Gen 2, which also work on Windows.
Which cable do you need to connect the Apollo Twin X USB?
A certified USB 3 SuperSpeed cable, Type-A or Type-C at one end and Type-C at the interface end, no longer than 2 metres: it is not included. Beyond that length, performance degrades. The interface is not powered over USB: its 12 V power supply, supplied with a mains cord, plugs in at the back with a locking connector that prevents accidental disconnection.
What does the Heritage Edition of the Apollo Twin X USB include?
Five UAD titles: the UA 1176 Classic Limiter Collection, the Teletronix LA-2A Classic Leveler Collection, the Pultec Passive EQ Collection, the UA 610 Tube Preamp & EQ Collection and the UA Pure Plate Reverb, four of which also come as UAD Native versions for the computer. The Realtime Analog Classics bundle is added on top. They are obtained by registering online a new interface bought from an authorised dealer.
What does the DUO Core DSP of the Apollo Twin X USB do?
Its two SHARC processors run the UAD plug-ins without loading the PC's processor. During recording, UAD Console lets you hear yourself through a UAD preamp or compressor with a 1.1 ms round trip at 96 kHz, whatever buffer setting your software uses. At the mixing stage, the same plug-ins open in your Windows recording software, in VST and AAX formats.
Can you plug a guitar straight into the Apollo Twin X USB?
Yes, into the Hi-Z input on the front, with a mono 6.35 mm jack. It automatically replaces the mic and line inputs of channel 1, with a default impedance of 1 MΩ and gain from +10 to +65 dB. Thanks to Unison, you record guitar or bass through emulations of Fender, Marshall or Ampeg amps, available in the UAD catalogue, without disruptive latency.
How can you add inputs to the Apollo Twin X USB?
Through the TOSLINK optical input on the back: in ADAT, an external preamp adds up to 8 channels at 44.1 or 48 kHz, 4 at 88.2 or 96 kHz and 2 above that; in S/PDIF, one stereo pair up to 96 kHz. For more processing power when mixing, a UAD-2 Satellite USB can be paired with it, within the limit of two UAD-2 devices over USB.
Can the Apollo Twin X USB replace a monitor controller?
Yes, for the essentials: in Monitor mode, the top-panel buttons set the speaker and headphone volumes separately, and give Dim, Mono and Mute, plus Alt to switch to a second pair of speakers on line outputs 3-4. The built-in talkback mic, activated by the Talk button, lets you speak to the musician in their headphones. Mute does not cut the headphone output.
