Four complete channels, side by side
The four XLR / 6.35 mm jack combo inputs arrive on four separate tracks. Each has its own gain, its own INST button for a passive guitar or bass, its own Vintage preamp and its own 76 compressor. The 48 V phantom power is shared and goes to all four XLR inputs at once: switch it off before plugging or unplugging a mic, and leave it off for some ribbon mics.
The grain of a 610 on every input
Each Vintage button switches in a fully analogue stage that recreates the colour of the UA 610 tube preamp from Universal Audio's consoles. The 76 compressor, inspired by the 1176 limiter, offers three presets at a 6:1 ratio: VOC (attack 2 ms, release 300 ms) for vocals, GTR (1.5 ms, 700 ms), which lets the string attack through, and FAST (30 µs, 35 ms) for firm compression. The same button switches the circuit off.

Two 6.35 mm jack headphone outputs, each with its own volume, let the singer and the engineer listen at the same time; they receive the same mix as the speakers. The IN 1-2 and IN 3-4 buttons send the inputs back with no latency, odd inputs to the left and even inputs to the right, and MONO brings them to the centre. OUT 1-2 and OUT 3-4 choose what you hear from the computer.
Four line outputs on top of the speakers
At the back, two monitor outputs set by the Monitor knob, and four balanced line outputs that receive the software's sound at full level: outputs 1-2 carry the main mix, and 3-4 are assigned in the software for additional monitoring. Add the 5-pin DIN MIDI In and Out sockets, the USB-C port running USB 2.0 and the power supply input.
A power adapter, and every system
Unlike the Volt 176 and 276, the Volt 476P is not powered by the USB bus: it uses its 5 V DC adapter, supplied with its mains plugs, and draws 6.6 W in typical use. Class compliant, it works on macOS 11 or later and on iPad or iPhone running iOS 14; on 64-bit Windows 10 or 11, the UA Connect app installs the ASIO driver, registers the interface and unlocks LUNA with a bundle of UAD plug-ins for Mac and PC.

Plug in the supplied power adapter: the Volt 476P is not designed to run on the USB cable alone. The Monitor outputs are not amplified: they need active speakers or an amplifier.

Can the Volt 476P run on the USB port alone?
No: the Volt 476P connects to its 5 V DC power supply, supplied with mains adapters. Universal Audio does not design it to be powered by the USB bus, unlike the Volt 176 and 276. The supplied USB-C to USB-A cable then links the interface to the computer for audio, and the rear switch powers it on. It draws 6.6 W in typical use, 10.6 W at most.
How many microphones can you record at the same time on the Volt 476P?
Four: its four XLR / 6.35 mm jack combo inputs each have a preamp, a gain, a Vintage preamp, a 76 compressor and an INST button, and arrive on four separate tracks. The 48 V applies to all four XLR inputs at once: a vocal-guitar duo with two room mics, or a small drum kit, fits on a single interface.
What are the two headphone outputs of the Volt 476P for?
To let two people listen at once, each with their own volume knob, on a 6.35 mm stereo jack. Both headphone outputs receive the same mix as the monitor outputs: there is no separate mix per headphone. Each output delivers 84 mW per channel into 32 Ω; headphones with a 3.5 mm plug need an adapter. These volumes are independent of the speakers' Monitor knob.
What are line outputs 1 to 4 of the Volt 476P for?
They receive the software's sound without going through the Monitor volume, at full level. Outputs 1-2 carry the main mix that the software sends to them; 3-4 are assigned explicitly in the software, for additional monitoring. They are four balanced 6.35 mm TRS jacks at the back, putting out up to 15 dBu.
How do you hear your inputs with no latency on the Volt 476P?
With the IN 1-2 and IN 3-4 source buttons: the inputs go to the headphones and speakers directly, with no latency, odd inputs to the left and even inputs to the right. MONO brings them to the centre. OUT 1-2 or OUT 3-4 must be lit to hear the computer: OUT 1-2 is lit from the factory. When IN and OUT are on together, the software's sound drops slightly so the inputs can be heard.
How do you set and switch off the 76 compressor on the Volt 476P?
With its button, one per input: it cycles through the VOC, GTR and FAST presets and also switches the circuit off, the orange light then going out; there is no preset marked OFF. VOC attacks in 2 ms and releases in 300 ms, GTR in 1.5 ms / 700 ms, FAST in 30 µs / 35 ms, at a 6:1 ratio. Reset the gain after switching it on.
Does the Volt 476P work with an iPad or an iPhone?
Yes, on iOS 14 or later: the interface is class compliant, with no driver to install. An iPad with a USB-C port connects with a USB-C cable, others with the Apple Lightning to USB Camera Adapter. The power supply is still required, and the supplied software, LUNA included, is for Mac and PC.
What software comes with the Volt 476P?
The LUNA digital audio workstation and the UAD Explore FREE plug-in bundle, activated by registering the interface on a Universal Audio account with the UA Connect app. These licences cannot be transferred to another user. On Windows, UA Connect also installs the interface's ASIO driver; macOS needs none.
