What exactly is in the box, and will I be missing anything to use it?
The box contains the printer, its 24 V external power supply, an ink ribbon, roll paper and the operating instructions. Two cables must be provided: the mains cord that connects the power supply to the wall socket and the interface cable to your till or computer.
Can it open the cash drawer automatically?
Yes. The machine has a dedicated drawer kick-out connector, with a 2-driver D.K.D. function. It is separate from the RS-232 serial link that connects the printer to the till: the two coexist on the unit.
How does it connect to my till or computer?
Via an RS-232 serial link, the connection provided on this TM-U220D. Check that your POS terminal or computer has a serial port, and plan for the interface cable: it is not included.
Is it a thermal printer, or do I need to buy ribbons?
It is not a thermal printer: it is a 9-pin impact dot matrix printer that strikes an ink ribbon. The consumable to replace is therefore the ribbon, and a first ribbon is supplied in the box. Two-colour printing lets you highlight a total or a note on the receipt.
Can you print a duplicate receipt, one for the customer and one for the till?
Yes. This 9-pin impact dot matrix printer is rated for one original plus one copy: enough to hand the receipt to the customer and keep the duplicate for the till.
Which paper rolls does it accept, and what is the maximum diameter?
Three widths: 76 mm, 69.5 mm and 57.5 mm, each with a maximum roll diameter of 83 mm. It is this diameter that you need to check before ordering your rolls in bulk. A roll-end sensor also tells you when to reload.
How many characters fit across the width of a receipt?
33 or 40 columns on a 76 mm roll, depending on the density chosen (13.3 or 16 characters per inch). The stated rate is 4.70 lines per second at 40 columns. The character set covers 95 alphanumeric characters and 48 international sets.
Is it designed to run all day at a point of sale?
Yes. It is rated at a mean time between failures of 180,000 hours for an average print volume of 18 million lines, with a stated lifespan of 7.5 million lines. Two sensors also monitor the roll end and the cover opening.
Can it stand vertically or be mounted on a wall?
Yes: it can be installed horizontally or vertically, with vertical installation done on a wall bracket. This frees up space on a checkout counter.
