Is a hard drive included with the DS124?
No. The box contains the main unit, an AC adapter, an RJ-45 network cable, an accessory pack and the quick installation guide: the drive is chosen and purchased separately, and its cost comes on top of the enclosure. For this, Synology lists its 3.5-inch HAT3300 series.
Which drives does it accept, and can an SSD be installed?
It accepts a 3.5-inch SATA hard drive or a 2.5-inch SATA SSD, the latter requiring an optional mounting bracket, not included. It has no M.2 slot. SSD TRIM is, however, supported.
With a single bay, what happens if the drive fails?
The only volume type available is Basic, on a single drive: there is no copy on a second drive. Protection relies on Hyper Backup backups to multiple destinations and on Snapshot Replication snapshots, up to 256 per shared folder. A single-bay NAS centralises your data; it does not replace a backup.
What is the maximum capacity it can take?
Up to 108 TB for a single volume, in Btrfs or ext4, with only one internal volume. The actual usable capacity is slightly lower: the file system and metadata take up space, and the effective size depends on the drive installed.
How many users and concurrent connections does it support?
1,024 local accounts, 256 groups and 256 shared folders, with 200 concurrent SMB, AFP or FTP connections. Synology Drive, for its part, is sized for 200 sync clients and 500,000 hosted files. Enough to cover an SME or an entire department.
Can it be used as a video surveillance recorder?
Yes, with Surveillance Station: 2 camera licences are included (further ones must be purchased) and more than 8,300 IP cameras or ONVIF devices are compatible. At 1080p, up to 12 streams are recommended, and up to 12 4K streams in H.265.
Is it noisy if left in an office or a bedroom?
It is measured at 19 dB(A) at one metre, idle and fitted with Synology drives. Its 60 mm fan offers four modes — full speed, cool, quiet and low power — and the front LEDs have adjustable brightness, which helps in a living space.
How much power does it draw if left on permanently?
10.69 W in access and 3.44 W when the drive goes into hibernation, with a 36 W adapter. It accepts 100 to 240 V at 50/60 Hz, and scheduled power on/off lets you switch it off at night or at weekends. It restarts automatically after a power cut and can be woken from sleep over the network.
Can you access your files remotely, and from which devices?
Yes, with Synology Drive, available on PC, Mac, Linux, Chromebook, Android, iOS and from any browser. Cloud Sync also synchronises your folders with Google Drive, Dropbox or OneDrive, while keeping a local copy of the data.
Can an external USB drive be connected for an extra backup?
Yes: it has two USB 3.2 Gen 1 ports and reads external drives formatted in Btrfs, ext4, ext3, FAT, NTFS, HFS+ or exFAT. A drive from a Windows PC or a Mac can therefore be used straight away, without reformatting first.
Is it built for professional use, with iSCSI and VPN?
Yes: SAN Manager handles 10 iSCSI targets and 10 LUNs, the VPN server accepts 20 connections and the log centre handles 400 syslog events per second. It supports SMB 1 to 3, NFS up to v4.1, iSCSI, FTP, WebDAV, Rsync, LDAP and CalDAV.
How much space does it take up, and where can it be installed?
166 × 71 × 224 mm and 0.7 kg empty — add the weight of the drive: it sits on the corner of a desk or on a shelf. It operates between 0 and 40 °C and has a Kensington security slot for securing it in a shared room.
Can the data be encrypted, and which standards does the NAS comply with?
Its Realtek RTD1619B 64-bit quad-core processor includes a hardware encryption engine. The device is certified FCC, CE, BSMI, VCCI, RCM, UKCA, EAC, CCC and KC, and is RoHS compliant.
How long is the DS124 warranty, and can it be extended?
2 years, with the invoice serving as the warranty document; the period starts from the purchase date shown on the receipt. The Synology extension to 4 years exists, but is only offered in Europe and North America. Full details are in the datasheet (PDF).
